The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Direct Support Professional who has experience working with individuals with Developmental / Intellectual Disabilities in a Day Support setting for SkillQuest program. This position is responsible for overseeing day support program rooms and staff, managing caseloads, while assisting the unit supervisor.

Duties:
- Provide group day services to adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities, using methods that encourage independence.
- Assist with mobility by working to prevent falls, use of walkers/wheelchairs, transfers, use of mechanical lift
- Oversee client’s health care by monitoring/reporting concerns, seizure management, nutrition/hydration, assistance with medications/treatments, teach good health habits
- Assist clients with personal care (use the bathroom, eating)
- Identify interests of clients and adapt activities to meet needs and increase independence
- Assist with life skills such as cooking, money, hygiene practices, cleaning, advocacy
- Work with clients to develop socialization skills by teaching generally accepted social behaviors, improve communication skills
- Assist with utilizing public and other transportation, avoid exploitation, identify/use community resources, and identifying volunteer opportunities
- Teach emotional regulation skills and work to avoid/defuse crisis situations, prevent harm to self or others, teach anger management/stress reduction techniques
- Implement Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) and Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) under the direction of the group leader and the clinician responsible for the group to assist individuals with reaching personal goals. Documents support provided according to current practices. Provide ongoing input to responsible staff regarding changes needed to ISP/IPP.
- Participate in developing a monthly activity calendar focusing on person-centered group activities. Reads and provides information daily in communication logs/books for assigned individuals.

**A $2,500 hiring bonus is being offered for this position. Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.
- $500 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
- $750 will be awarded upon completion of the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
- $1,250 will be awarded upon completion of the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
