Job Duties:
GROUNDS CREW LEADER duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Individual will effectively coordinate, supervise and train assigned personnel in and during the performance of landscape activities including but not limited to landscape construction, plant installation and maintenance, turf maintenance, litter collection, chemical application and playground installation, maintenance and repair at various schools, municipal sites, and roadways.
Individual will maintain city roadways throughout the season.
Perform landscape maintenance or landscape construction.
Maintain records.
Prepare employee appraisal reports and daily work reports.
Ensure the proper application of required safety standards and proper operation and maintenance of relative equipment.
Interpret and enforce rules, regulations and policies.
Tactfully, promptly and effectively respond to citizen concerns Prepare written reports Maintain efficient records and inventories assigned tools and equipment.
Provide special event support as needed.
Work is performed outside in all weather conditions including temperature extremes*

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS:
High school diploma or GED plus two (2) years experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, in landscape maintenance, beautification, park or public lands construction and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
May require a Commercial drivers license and/or pesticide certification.

Preferences:
In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided on the application.
Two (2) years experience supervising employees engaged in landscape and/or grounds maintenance & park operations related duties
Two (2) years experience in landscape equipment operation
Experience in grounds maintenance activities and demonstrated knowledge of horticultural practices
Chemical application experience
Experience using computer based work order management systems and/or reservation/registration
software
Experience in athletic field preparation and maintenance
Valid Virginia Pesticide Applicators Certificate
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License
Valid VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Training and Flag Certification
Experience in work zone safety
Experience coordinating multiple job assignments
Knowledge of proper personal protective equipment
Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and written with all levels of employees internal and external
Customer service experience
Special Instructions:
