We are very proud of our Animal Care and Adoption Center (ACAC) which opened at 341 South Birdneck Road in December 2011.  We are an open admission facility, meaning that we accept all animals.  We work hard to reunite stray and lost animals with their owners.  When that is not possible, we strive to place animals in their forever home.  In some cases, we place animals with rescue or rehabilitation organizations.  

​The Animal Care and Adoption Center is a fast-paced and challenging environment. It is not unusual to serve 100 shelter visitors per day engaged in various activities including processing incoming animals, animal adoptions, animal reclaims, and license purchases while simultaneously assisting with phone inquiries of an equal volume.  The successful candidate will possess a strong affinity to assist customers with difficult situations, a desire to present the shelter as a resource for the community and possess and display enthusiasm for working with customers adopting a new pet. 

This position will perform a variety of responsible clerical work, serving as the primary customer contact in greeting and assisting shelter visitors; providing oral counseling to citizens in need of support for their pet; scheduling adoption, surrender, and veterinary appointments; performing filing and computer data entry; compiling data and preparing statistical reports; answering multi-line phone system; calculating and collect fees; preparing monetary deposits; completing required forms related to incoming/outgoing animals, including adoption paperwork; preparing flyers for marketing shelter animals; and distributing mail and managing email inboxes.  The position also involves various duties on social media platforms such as posting adoption lists and responding to messages from citizens, and may preform notary duties.

Criminal History:  Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals).  Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.

Traffic Violations:  Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.

Drugs :  Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult.    Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years.  Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.
