Job Duties:
The City of Virginia Beach, Department of Public Utilities is seeking a Survey Aide. This position performs a variety of task in support of an engineering survey party involved in system record keeping, field verification and basic survey work. The Survey Aide will assist their assigned crew in completing day to day survey tasks such as topographic surveys, transferring elevations and GIS data collection.
The position may be classified as a Survey Aide I or Survey Aide II depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
- Survey Aide I: G.13 $30,814.70 - $47,762.79
- Survey Aide II: G.16 $35,671.90 - $55,291.45
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- holding a grade rod or plumb bob to determine elevations and distances
- assisting in maintaining field notes and performing minor calculations to help ensure accuracy of work
- operating electronic locating devices to mark existing utility lines.
- digging, cutting brush, or driving hubs and guard stakes to locate or mark property boundaries
- opening covers for underground utility structures
- take neat and legible field notes
- operate utility location equipment such as a metro tech
- run a survey transit/GPS rover in conjunction with a handheld survey data collector for field data collection
- find/locate property line, operate a construction level for the transfer of elevations

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications Survey Aide I: Requires high school or GED; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such fields as surveying, construction, or
drafting.
Minimum Qualifications Survey Aide II: High school or GED plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as surveying work, construction, engineering drafting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

Preferences:
Experience in Surveying
Experience in heavy construction, i.e., roads/drainage/utilities
Experience with water, sanitary sewer and/or storm infrastructure
Experience with basic mathematical calculations
Experience with Utility location/equipment
Experience with GPS, Survey Transits and Collectors
Experience with reading Construction Plans
Experience with Microsoft Suite
Special Instructions:
This is an Alpha I position, that means that employees must be available to work when other city offices may be closed or operating with limited personnel due to "modified" or "essential operating conditions.
