What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Crew Leader position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for a Utility Crew Leader within our Meter Operations team.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide supervision and direct activity of field staff in the technical maintenance and repair of various size and type of water meters, service lines, curb stops, and valves.
- Provide field training on metering infrastructure and oversee complex, routine, and emergency repairs.
- Provide field support in diagnosing complex maintenance & repair issues.
- Ensure proper operating procedures are followed, and best repair techniques are utilized.
- Identify & provide field training to crew in their native environment.
- Work as a liaison between the field staff and the customer.
- Fill in as the UMS in their absence.
- Ensure crew follows Federal safety and environmental regulations and standard operating procedures
- Completes required paperwork and prepare written documentation of work activities, incident reports, tap orders, DF75 and Public Works cut sheets
- Knowledge of computerized work order management system and GIS mapping system
- Respond to and resolve customer inquiries in a courteous and timely manner
- Participate in member training programs and identify needs for staff training
- Communicate clearly with the Utility Mechanic Supervisor about any issues that arise
- Provide input to Utility Mechanic Supervisor for performance feedback for crew evaluations and training
- Works in all types of weather conditions as well as nights, weekends, holidays, and standby as needed. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operation status
- Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs
