Overview
The Assistant Chief of Police (Major) for the City of Warm Springs Police Department is a senior leadership position responsible for assisting the Chief of Police in managing and overseeing the daily operations of the police department. This role involves strategic planning, administration, and coordination of all police functions to ensure the effective enforcement of laws, the safety of the community, and the professional development of department personnel. This is a working position with an assigned shift including patrolling duties as needed.
Duties
- Operational Oversight: Assist in managing and directing the activities of the police department, including patrol, investigations, community policing, and support services.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic initiatives and policies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
- Leadership and Supervision: Provide leadership and supervision to subordinate officers and civilian staff, including performance evaluations, training, and professional development.
- Patrol Duties: Conduct patrols as needed to ensure the safety and security of the community, respond to incidents, and support patrol officers in the field.
- Budget Management: Assist in the preparation and administration of the department’s budget; monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with budgetary constraints.
- Community Relations: Foster positive relationships with community members, local businesses, and other government agencies to enhance public safety and community trust.
- Policy Development: Enforcement of departmental policies and procedures.
- Emergency Response: Serve as a key member of the command staff during emergency situations and critical incidents, ensuring appropriate response and resource allocation.
- Public Safety Programs: Oversee the development and implementation of crime prevention and public safety programs.
- Compliance: Ensure departmental compliance with local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and standards.
- Internal Affairs: Assist in the oversight of internal investigations and the resolution of disciplinary matters.
- Reporting: Prepare and present reports on departmental activities, crime statistics, and other relevant data to the Chief of Police, city officials, and the public.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or command position.
- Certifications: Certification from a recognized law enforcement training academy; advanced law enforcement certifications preferred.
- Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to make sound decisions under pressure. Proficient in the use of law enforcement technology and software.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and methods. Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to community policing principles and possess excellent communication skills to effectively engage with diverse populations.
Work Environment
The Assistant Chief of Police (Major) will work in various environments, including office settings, community locations, and field settings. The role may involve exposure to potentially hazardous situations and requires the ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
