Summary - Incumbent serves as Maintenance Technician for the City of Warsaw Wastewater Utility, responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing various mechanical equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Analyzes equipment malfunctions, including observing, listening and identifying problems and solutions at waste treatment plant facility, including permitted/non-permitted Confined Space Entry space for sewer and storm maintenance and repairs. Operates and performs adjustments, preventive maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, such as blowers, pumps, grinders, grit/sludge/scum collectors, chemical feeders, chlorinators, pipes, valves, meters, gauges, and compressors, including disassembling/reassembling, cleaning, lubricating parts, and changing oil, bushings, sleeves, bearings and filters. Performs various mechanical trades in repairing, designing and fabricating parts/units/assemblies, including welding, brazing, torch cutting, and wiring. Inspects and maintains lift stations, including removing excess grease, operating reset buttons in control boxes, checking atmosphere for gas accumulation, replacing pump floats, and pulling pumps and equipment for repair or replacement, including weirs, junction boxes, gates, overflow diversion structures and all other related equipment. Maintains department buildings, including painting, refinishing, and performing carpentry, washes and cleans vehicles and equipment as needed or assigned. Maintains plant and lift station grounds, including mowing and trimming grass, removing weeds, leaves and debris and brush, sweeping and mopping floors, washing windows, shoveling snow and salting for ice, and collecting and removing trash. Maintains detailed records of repair and maintenance activity as required. Assists with duties of other departments and city personnel as assigned, such as operating heavy equipment, loading dirt and materials in trucks, digging holes and trenches, installing pipes, manholes, catch basins, and brick and cement structures. Performs routine cleaning and emergency repair of the storm sewers, sanitary sewer and combined sewer systems. Performs related duties as assigned.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGES – High school diploma or GED preferred, with experience in maintenance work involving utility maintenance and repairs. Thorough knowledge of tools, materials, methods and practices used in repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment, including engines, electrical, and other systems. Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of OSHA policies and procedures and properly operate a variety of tools and equipment, such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, drill press, air compressor, grinder, cutting torch, welding equipment, jacks, overhead trolleys, chain hoists, power saws, sewer rodder, vactor, trucks, bobcats, loaders, mowers, and backhoes. Thorough knowledge of and ability to perform various mechanical trades, including plumbing, welding, torch cutting, brazing, fabrication, camera operations, and machining. Ability to perform repairs and maintenance duties in a permitted/non-permitted Confined Space while following OSHA and general construction guidelines as required. Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, specifications, technical manuals, instruments, gauges and dials. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and work alone and with others in a team environment. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to physically and safely perform assigned duties. Ability to maintain personal composure and tact during difficult situations. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. Possession of a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (A or B) and demonstrated safe driving record. Ability to serve on-call on a rotating basis.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT - Incumbent's duties involve continuous physical exertion, such as standing/walking and being in cramped, uncomfortable positions for long periods, close vision, hearing mechanical sounds, pushing/ pulling/ lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, reaching, bending, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent is exposed to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials, toxic chemicals and fumes including permitted/non-permitted Confined Space Entry exposure. Incumbent performs duties in/outdoors involving exposure to normal hazards and material associated with the treatment of wastewater and storm water, such as insects, traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicles fumes, cleaning and treatment chemicals, extreme outdoor temperatures. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Incumbent is occasionally required to work extended, evening, and/or weekend hours, and occasionally travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight.
