Summary - Incumbent serves as Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor for the City of Warsaw Parks and Recreation
Department, responsible for ensuring the safety of beach patrons, and maintaining cleanliness of beach facilities.
* Incumbent in position is a Seasonal Employee with specific dates of employment and not eligible for unemployment benefits through this employer during the “off-season”.
Requirements/Licenses: Must be at least 16 years of age. Possession of a current valid CPR certification, current First Aid certificate, and be trained and certified by the American Red Cross, or a similar certifying organization, in aquatics and water safety. Water Safety Instructor certificate preferred. Must pass a pre-employment drug and or alcohol test, submit to random testing and adhere to policy. Successful candidates who currently do not have certifications must be able to obtain them within a designated period of time.
Duties / Responsibilities / Physical Effort: Oversees and ensures safety of beach patrons, including maintaining control of assigned area, observing swimmers and other patrons, explaining and enforcing posted rules, disciplining as needed, or notifying appropriate personnel of serious violations or persons with numerous violations. Follows assigned Emergency Action Plan procedures as needed, including providing rescue and emergency care, and completing incident reports as needed. Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from patrons, including listening, investigating, and initiating action to resolve valid complaints. Assists in teaching swimming and lifesaving classes. Assist in maintaining cleanliness of beach area and related facilities, including picking up litter. Notifies supervisor of any hazardous conditions observed. Periodically assists patrons with physical disabilities in getting in/out of beach swimming area as requested. Performs related duties as assigned.
Skills/Abilities: Working knowledge of and ability to apply various safety and health policies and procedures, including first aid,
CPR, and bloodborne pathogens control. Ability to respond swiftly, rationally, and decisively to emergencies, following assigned
Emergency Action Plan procedures and using required equipment, such as rescue tube and mask. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and beach patrons, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions / directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism. Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate / hostile persons. Ability to work alone or in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful working relationships with co- workers. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is subject to daily sun exposure, extreme temperatures, noise and communicable diseases, for which universal health/safety precautions must be exercised at all times to protect self and others. Incumbent performs duties outdoors at a beach area, involving sitting for long periods, sitting and walking at will, walking on uneven terrain, bending reaching, crouching/kneeling, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, color and depth perception, speaking clearly, handling/grasping/fingering objects, swimming, climbing lookout ladder, acute close and far vision, acute hearing, and maintaining constant alertness.
