Position Overview
The City of Wauwatosa is hiring a Network & Security Technician to join our Information Services team! Under direction, this position administers and maintains the City's network infrastructure and cybersecurity systems. This position researches, recommends, and implements technical solutions that align with the City and user needs. It assists with the planning, design, procurement, and implementation of IT systems and architecture. This role supports the City's network, server, and storage systems, including hardware and software maintenance, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and ensuring the security and integrity of systems, including backup and disaster recovery.
The pay range for this position is $30.25 -38.65 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Essential Functions
- Maintain and configure Fortinet firewall, Cisco switches and routers, and knowledge of fiber, wireless, and related network technologies.
- Administer and support local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and network security systems.
- Provide troubleshooting, analysis, and support for network infrastructure and resolve issues related to connectivity, bandwidth, and network equipment.
- Assist with monitoring network performance and take necessary actions to ensure continuous operation of network services.
- Assist in the deployment and maintenance of virtual networks, including network segmentation and security configurations.
- Assist with the development and implementation of network security policies, configurations, and monitoring tools to safeguard network assets.
- Document and maintain detailed network architecture, including diagrams and procedures for network design and implementation.
- Perform routine system checks and network health assessments to ensure optimal performance.
- Provide backup to City helpdesk and network staff; ability to work a varied schedule and respond to emergencies.
- Monitor and maintain endpoint protection systems, settings, and network security tools.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, twist, and reach. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is also regularly required to talk and hear, in person, in meetings and by telephone; interact with city management, other governmental officials, contractors, vendors, and employees; read and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve problems. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The position requires the ability to climb ladders, crawl under desks, and work above ceilings in confined spaces to install, maintain, and troubleshoot network devices and cabling. The employee must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. An employee in this class generally works in a standard office environment. The position also requires outdoor work in various weather conditions to maintain and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including fiber and other networks located in external environments.
