The City of Wauwatosa is seeking a Community Service Officer (CSO) to provide support and assistance to the Wauwatosa Police Department by performing a variety of functions including parking enforcement, traffic control, special event staffing, ordinance violation enforcement, and vehicle and equipment maintenance. This unarmed position and is an ideal opportunity for candidates looking to gain experience in the law enforcement field.
Schedule:
Must be flexible - Shift hours may include working any of the following: day, early shift, evening, weekends, special events, and holidays.
12-20 hours per week.
The starting salary for this position is $17.48 per hour. It is complemented by a flexible work schedule, and the opportunity to work with dedicated professionals that have a passion for public service.
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Safely operates a city-owned vehicle while on duty.
- Interacts with the public on a daily basis while wearing a Community Service Officer uniform.
- Performs daytime and overnight parking enforcement through self-initiated activity, designated patrol areas, and dispatched complaints for service.
- Responds to and enforces ordinance violations such as domestic animals at large, junked/abandoned motor vehicles, snow removal and noise complaints.
- Photographs, documents, and removes graffiti as assigned.
- Assists with Community Support programming to include neighborhood block watch, Crime Stoppers, meetings, presentations, special events, and other duties as assigned.
- Conducts business visits and gathers information that is critical to first responders.
- Inspects and logs supplies placed in our frontline fleet vehicles, and assists with vehicle fueling and washing.
- Other duties and learning experiences as assigned.
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Must possess a current and valid Driver’s License with a minimum number of traffic infractions in the past 5 years.
Other/Preferred Requirements:
- Aspirations for a future career in law enforcement are desirable.
- Current enrollment in criminal justice or related field post-high school coursework preferred.
- Associate’s degree or higher in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Previous paid or volunteer law enforcement or security-related experience preferred
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications:
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
- Must possess excellent moral character and highest personal integrity.
- Ability to work with and respect the chain of command.
- Willing to go through and be exposed to O.C. (Pepper Spray) training.
- Ability to work all three shifts and weekends (flexible scheduling to accommodate other work and/or school commitments; however, CSOs must be able to work special events on weekends and during evening hours).
