The Team
The City of Webster Groves Public Works team takes pride in executing the traditional functions of Public Works while providing excellent customer service.
The Department of Public Works oversees a number of services through its Engineering & Administration and Street Divisions. These services include:
- Trash, Recycling, and Yard Waste Collection
- Sanitary Sewer Lateral Repair Program
- Excavation Permits
- Chip Sealing City Streets
- Planting, Trimming, and Removing Trees in the City Right-of-Way
- Stormwater Improvement Program
- Traffic Analysis
- Traffic Control Upkeep on all Projects
- Street Maintenance
What you’ll do - Key Responsibilities
- Review project specifications and confer with Project Manager and/or Director of Public Works concerning assistance required such as plan preparation, acceptance testing, evaluation of field conditions, design changes, and reports.
- Manage and oversees both the Sewer Lateral and Right of Way programs.
- Meet with residents and contractors alike regularly for sewer lateral inquiries and discussions on the SLRP and what to expect.
- Review Sewer Lateral Videos and determine actions to be taken that align with the policies of the Sewer Lateral Program.
- Navigate Scheduling/Payment/Resident needs through the duration of the resident’s sewer lateral repair process
- Draft and calculates field notes to document quantities, alignment, grade and locations according to project plans or to document monthly and final progress estimates.
- Assist in surveys of project sites to obtain and analyze topographical details of sites.
- Research records, maps and other data to obtain typical engineering data such as location of sewer stubs, water mains, hydrants, etc. and zoning district designations or special property assessments.
- Draft detailed dimensional drawings such as those needed for street, water, sewer, drainage, and other utility plans, systems and projects.
- Calculate dimensions, profile specifications, and quantities of materials such as pipe, concrete, and asphalt.
- Inspects construction site to determine conformance of site to design specifications.
- Assist engineers to ensure that construction and repair of transportation, or Stormwater systems meet standard construction specifications.
- Assist in the review of private project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards, adequacy of applications for permits and compliance with approved plans.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, coordinates required advertising for bids, reviews construction bids and makes necessary recommendations.
- Assist in the preparation of storm drainage and street system maps, data bases, and comprehensive plans.
- Assist in the maintenance of engineering and infrastructure records. Prepares and drafts as-built plans for street, sewer or utility systems. Updates and maintains public work assets in asset management software.
- Review applications for utility permits, street use permits, franchise utility permits, etc.
- Issuance, entering, and processing excavation permits as needed.
- Assist in the evaluation of transportation and traffic impacts of development proposals, permits, rezones, plats, etc. Sets out traffic counters and prepares analysis of results.
- Assist and execute Traffic Analysis and drafting related reports.
- Assist in the development of pavement management systems.
- Serve as a drafter, by making final sketch of proposed drawing, checking dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project; making any adjustments or changes necessary or desired; Drawing charts for representation of statistical data; and drawing finished designs from sket
You Have (Knowledge & Abilities):
- 2-year (Associates) degree in drafting, Computer-Aided-Design (CAD), engineering technology or civil engineering
- Ability to pass an extensive background check
- Excellent computer skills – Email/Microsoft Office/Adobe PDF
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.
- Knowledge of applicable City policies, laws & regulations affecting Department activities.
- Advanced skill in arriving at cost estimates on complex projects.
- Considerable skill in drafting & surveying.
- Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field and office data, reports and systems.
- Considerable skill to effectively communicate complex technical information both orally and in writing to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered by the city.
