The City of Wentzville is seeking a Water Operator II to oversee and participate in the operations and maintenance of the city’s water supply and distribution systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring efficient daily operations, troubleshooting complex issues, and leading a team in the field. Under moderate supervision, the ideal candidate will exercise independent judgment while adhering to established guidelines and industry standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Leadership & Teamwork: Serve as a team leader in the field, guiding and assisting crew members with daily operations, repairs, and maintenance.
- Customer Service & Communication: Provide respectful, professional, and positive service in interactions with co-workers, residents, and stakeholders.
- Water System Maintenance: Lead and participate in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, fire hydrants, valves, and service lines, including ground excavation, asphalt, and concrete repairs.
- Emergency Response: Diagnose and repair emergency water main breaks, addressing failed distribution infrastructure while inspecting and repairing adjacent segments.
- System Inspections & Compliance: Conduct service inspections and maintenance, ensuring all new service installations comply with DNR regulations and city standards.
- Utility Location & GIS Mapping: Identify, mark, and update GPS locations of city utilities (valves, hydrants, water/sewer mains, manholes, and meter structures) for GIS mapping and maintenance programs.
- Hydrant & Valve Operations: Operate, inspect, and maintain hydrants and valves, flushing to remove sediment and maintain water quality and fire protection.
- Water Sampling & Compliance Testing: Perform water sampling for repairs, leak detection, concerns, and regulatory compliance testing.
- Meter Services: Conduct meter readings, service tickets, leak checks, and disconnections for utility billing, as well as installation and meter change-outs.
- Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Operate and perform intermediate-level maintenance on backhoes, skid loaders, mini excavators, vac trailers, dump trucks, forklifts, and power tools.
- Preventative Maintenance & Reporting: Participate in regulatory maintenance programs and maintain detailed records of work performed.
- Training & Safety: Assist in orienting and training new personnel, making recommendations for job procedure improvements. Ensure compliance with safety policies, including confined space entry, traffic safety, trenching, and shoring.
- Inventory & Supplies Management: Monitor and track inventory usage, ordering supplies as needed to maintain operations.

Qualifications
Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution services, main, meters, valves, hydrants and other relevant experience required.
- Job-relevant certification/license, completion of vocational/technical program, or completion of apprenticeship are preferred.
- Class A CDL with airbrakes and tanker endorsement preferred, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of employment required.
- Certification in Water Distribution DS-II testing is required.
- Electrofusion LDC Certification desired.
- Work Zone Safety certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license is required.

- Knowledge of HDPE pipes and fittings.
