What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Intern position at City of West Allis?
Under the close supervision of library leadership, the hired student intern will perform general duties to support library operations and initiatives, in particular shelving and programming support. The intern must be at least 16 years old and enrolled in either high school or in a post-secondary program (such as college or technical training). Start date May 2025. 12 hour/week
- Shelve and organize library materials.
- Move large quantities of materials from place to place for the purposes of shelving.
- Place materials in alphabetical or numerical order for shelving.
- Assist librarians with programs, including preparing materials and setting up for and cleaning up after programs.
- Assist with Summer Reading program activities as needed.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
- Generally, work will be within a normal office environment.
- Occasional exposure to out of doors during programming.
- Work schedules vary and may require occasional nights/weekends
- Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded books carts weighing up to 100 pounds, placing and retrieving materials above shoulder or below knee level, and ability to carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn library books shelving system and sort/file materials alphabetically.
- Communication skills are necessary to deal with the public in a courteous and cooperative manner.
- Comfortable working with children ages 0-11.
- Access to reliable transportation
