HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Definition: Under general direction of the Division Supervisor, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work and operates the largest and most complex equipment in the City’s fleet in the construction, maintenance, and replacement-related tasks in the Public Works departments. It is differentiated from the Truck Driver classification by the increased diversity, complexity of assignments, and type of equipment operated on a consistent basis.

Tasks:
General: Operates a variety of medium and heavy equipment. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment. Refers needed repairs to the supervisor. Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Performs minor maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment as aid to operation. May be responsible for contacting Utility Companies to determine location of gas, telephone, power, water and sewer lines sources prior to excavation. May act as crew leader in the absence of the lead worker or supervisor. Performs a variety of manual labor duties at construction sites. Performs other duties as assigned.
Duties specific to WPCD: May operate sewer truck, backhoe, loader, crane, TV inspection router and other equipment used in the excavation, construction and maintenance of sewer lines, system and facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:
Knowledge of heavy equipment vehicle operation.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local law, statutes, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Skill in the operation of various vehicles such as front-end loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, truck cranes, and related equipment.
Skill in performing job efficiently and safely.
Skill in routine maintenance and operating condition of equipment and welding containers.
Skill in performing heavy manual labor and working within the safety guidelines.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with people in all levels of the organization.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with the general public.
Materials and Equipment:
Automobile & Truck Heavy Equipment (division specific -loader, backhoe, sweeper, crane, etc.)
Division Hand Tools
Mental and Physical Abilities: Mental work efforts involve the application of oral and written instructions requiring independent decisions and assuming responsibility for the proper operation of heavy equipment which may impact the ability of the work unit to complete work in a timely and safe manner. Physical requirements include the ability to drive a standard shift vehicle and equipment, ability to sit while operating equipment, ability to stand, bend, stoop, twist and perform laborer duties on the construction site.
Working Conditions: Work involves the operation of heavy equipment in all types of weather conditions.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Seven (7) years of experience operating medium-size to heavy equipment. An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). May be required to secure certifications as determined by area of assignment.
