General Purpose

The City of Whitefish, Montana is actively recruiting for the Summer Camp Counselor position for our Parks & Recreation Department. We welcome your inquiries and encourage you to apply!

It is located on the shores of Whitefish Lake and the base of Big Mountain - home to Whitefish Mountain Resort. Whitefish also boasts over 36 miles of natural surface single-track mountain biking and hiking trails with 10 trailheads, golfing, world class dining, two professional live theater companies, and is only thirty minutes from Glacier National Park.

This position will remain open until filled.

This position will be filled on a "seasonal" "temporary" or "short-term" basis dependent upon the applicant's availability and timeframe worked, past and present. This position will be filled to work for the approximate time period of June 2025 - August 2025.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION :

Implement and supervise day camp activities for youth. Participate in activities such as art, athletics, games, and teambuilding events to support youth development. Maintain safety of assigned group. Demonstrate positive, professional, engaged demeanor with youth and parents / guardians.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Works under the direct supervision of the Camp Director. Works under the indirect supervision of the Recreation Programmer and Recreation Coordinator who reports to the Department Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

Supervises camp participants.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES :

Provides direct, active supervision of children at all times.

Creates a safe, inclusive environment for all participants.

Performs general camp facility cleaning duties as assigned. Duties may include, but are not limited to, trash pickup, mopping, sweeping, and bathroom disinfection.

Responds to public inquires or complaints and provides that information to Camp Director.

Maintains active CPR and 1st Aid Certification for duration of employment. Responds to and documents circumstances requiring CPR or 1st Aid. Follows the City of Whitefish Emergency Action Plan diligently as well as the Parks and Recreation Department Accident / Incident protocols.

  • Communicates with parents / guardians regularly in a positive, professional manner regarding activities, behavior, and concerns for their children.
  • Communicates daily with other Counselors and the Camp Director regarding pertinent participant information, facility maintenance information, etc.
  • MANAGEMENT :

  • Performs all job duties in compliance with the regulations of the City of Whitefish.
  • Demonstrates accountability for work assignments in the absence of a department supervisor; provides timely feedback to supervisors on progress of work activities.

    Education and Experience :

  • High maturity level and proven record of responsibility.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Must have the ability to treat all camp participants, guests, and City representatives with respect regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion, physical or mental abilities, nationality, or first language.
  • Must have the initiative to complete work assignments independently and on time.
  • Must have the ability to follow instructions, verbal and written, in English.
  • Must have the ability to supervise camp participants.
  • Must have the ability to remain professional during emergencies and / or emotionally escalated situations.
  • Must have ability to demonstrate enthusiastic / positive demeanor in all camp settings.
  • Must have the ability to manage the individual participant behavior and group dynamics.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and demonstrate flexibility for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Must demonstrate genuine concern for the learning and development of children.
  • Must have the fortitude to abide by and enforce rules, policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to accept constructive criticism from supervisors and apply suggested changes to instructional methodology, behavior management, program management, and similar.
  • Documented certification in CPR and 1st Aid, or ability to become certified.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, community leaders, parents / guardians and the public.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

    1st Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain certification before first day of employment. Must not appear on any State or National sex offender registry. Must be able to pass a State and Federal criminal background check.

    Lifeguard Certification (ISLA, Red Cross, ALA, YMCA) is preferred, but not necessary.

    Personal computer, tablet, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; telephone; cellular phone; hand-held radio; bicycle; variety of recreation equipment; semi-skilled or unskilled labor tools such as hammer, level, screwdriver, Allen wrench.
