Job Summary
As a Summer Camp Counselor at Excelsior Wellness Center, you will work alongside Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to guide youth through day camp activities that enhance social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual wellness. With a trauma-informed approach, the team will prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore a wide variety of recreational activities, boosting overall health and wellness.
This seasonal summer position includes comprehensive onboarding and training, including site-specific challenge course training, prior to the start of camp. Once onboarding and training is completed, you will work with a compassionate team of seasonal staff, Certified Recreation Therapy Specialists, Recreation Therapy Aides, and a Mental Health Clinician to provide eight weeks of camp for youth in the Spokane community living with mental and behavioral health challenges.
How to Qualify:
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree or working towards a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred.
- Experience in facilitating groups and recreation and leisure activities.
- Ability to work with a diverse population of staff and clients.
- Minimum one year of experience working and/or volunteering directly with youth; prior experience in behavioral health preferred.
- Ability to manage individual stress and perform essential job functions in a professional manner within a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to make safe and ethical decisions in a high-energy work setting.
- Must be 21 years or older.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to obtain challenge course certification and facilitate onsite challenge course activities.
- Valid driver’s license.
Core Responsibilities:

- Facilitate and co-facilitate recreation activities for groups of youth ages 8-17 years old, providing guidance and support while clients learn new skills and engage in activities that promote holistic wellbeing.
- Respond to client crises with empathy and efficiency. Implement safety interventions as needed.
- Maintain and organize recreation equipment and supplies, promptly reporting any needs or safety concerns to supervisor.
- Operate on-site challenge course. (On-the-job training will be provided.)
- Participate in all required training, daily huddles, and team meetings to stay informed on policies and procedures and ensure team cohesion, quality client care and program effectiveness.
- Adhere to ethical standards, agency policy and procedures and Excelsior mission, vision, and values.
- Represent the agency and its services to the community in a professional manner.
- Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.
Work Environment:
This position requires both indoor and outdoor work responsibilities. In the performance of outdoor job responsibilities employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme environmental conditions and should ensure they are dressed appropriately. Employees may occasionally be exposed to moderate to loud noise levels. This job also operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and operating software.
Physical Demands:
This role may require the ability to stand, walk, sit, engage in indoor and outdoor group activities, and lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be regularly required to participate with the clients in daily activities such as recreation, chores, and meals. The employee may occasionally be responsible for responding to client crisis and performing physical safety interventions should the situation require it. Occasionally the employee may be required to sit and ride in a vehicle and/or safely drive to transport clients.
