Summary: Performs skilled and semi-skilled building and mechanical maintenance tasks necessary for the upkeep and cleanliness of the water treatment plant and grounds as required. Receives training in and performs semi-skilled work in the routine operation, servicing, and maintenance of equipment at Williston Regional Water Treatment Plant.  

Supervision Received: Public Works Director, Operations Manager, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, Water Treatment Plant Foreman

Supervision exercised: As assigned. 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Inspects, evaluates, and services equipment, chemical feeders, motors, gauges and valves, pumps, controls, generators, and process equipment.
  2. Makes periodic rounds of the Plant to check equipment operation and flow meters; chemical feeders, pumps, generators, peripheral mechanical equipment, monitors and troubleshoots SCADA equipment. 
  3. Works with management to develop maintenance and training programs & schedules.
  4. Conducts various analysis and inspections of heating, cooling, air handling, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance and repair of plant & maintaining records where needed. 
  5. Evaluates status of plant scheduling for needed repairs or replacements.
  6. Requisitions and inventories supply for maintenance and equipment. 
  7. Must be able to read and understand building plans and schematics. 
  8. Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required. 
  9. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  10. Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours.
  11. The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.

Minimum Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of the water treatment plant and equipment maintenance, including pumps, motors, meters, controls, electrical systems and related equipment. Some knowledge of chemistry. Some knowledge of simple mathematics.  Ability to make accurate readings, keep records and make reports. Ability to take verbal and written instructions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Thorough knowledge of safety and security measures, which must be followed in the performance of duties. Thorough knowledge of building trades works, including heating and plumbing procedures. Physical strength and dexterity which permits proper performance of duties.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Previous experience in maintenance and operation of pumps and controls, motors and generators, electrical, HVAC is highly desirable OR any equivalent combination of education or experience.

Education: Graduation from high school with diploma or GED equivalent.

Necessary Special Requirement:  Valid North Dakota Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy. 

Tools and Equipment Used in Job Performance:  Motorized vehicles for driving and evaluation purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; mechanic’s tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; janitorial tools including floor buffers, steam cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, mowers, personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is quiet while in the office or moderately loud in the shop or field.
