What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recycling and Trash Operator position at City of Wilmington?
The purpose of this position is to operate a CDL-required trash truck on daily routes to pick up and empty trash or recycling carts, collect vegetative debris by emptying bags and cans or using a pitchfork, dispose of metal, electronics or large household items such as furniture or construction debris that does not fit in a trash cart, pick up of road kill animals and delivery and repair of trash and recycling carts. Work assignments are made daily where needed. After the collection has been completed crews dispose of debris at the appropriate site by using the truck's automated ejection system. Other duties may include working the rear of the truck for collection and assisting other Recycling and Trash operators or workers. Operators are required to work most City holidays and support cleanup efforts for City-sponsored events and festivals. Operators are expected to complete daily pre-trip and post-trip truck inspections and keep vehicles cleaned and well-maintained. This position is considered essential in times of emergency or natural disaster and is required to work most City-sponsored events and festivals and City-observed holidays.
Recycling & Trash Services Operators are required to work most City holidays and support cleanup efforts for City sponsored events and festivals. This positions is also considered essential and may be required to work before, during and after inclement weather events.
- Operates CDL required packer truck by performing morning pre-trip inspections; learning assigned daily routes; using cart tipper and packing system; using truck ejection system to unload trash, debris, and recycling; and performing evening post-trip inspection of truck.
- Disposes of trash by working with Recycling and Trash Worker to collect trash and recycling, ensuring only recyclable items are in bins, collecting bulky items from households, transport bulky items to scrap dealer, collecting vegetation from residences, ensuring workers on back of truck are safe and wearing proper safety gear, and cleaning of truck.
- Delivers and removes carts by receiving work orders, verifying new customers have correct size cart, and picking up carts from vacant addresses.
- High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relative experience.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, Class B CDL within 120 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain a FEMA - NIMS 100 and 700 certifications through independent study courses within 90 days of hire.
- Basic computer skills are required for online training and daily work interactions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally works in a vehicle and outdoors.
