Hours of work: 40 hours per week. Shifts may vary and/or include weekend work, but will have two consecutive days off. These positions will be approximately three to nine months in duration and will not exceed 1600 hours.

This position will remain open until filled.

The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, good communications skills, and will be a customer service oriented team player. Successful candidates must also possess the personal skills and abilities necessary to maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other City employees.  Job offers will be contingent on a background check, which includes a driver history check.  Qualified candidates must have and maintain a safe driving record.

Under the direct supervision of a Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing routine maintenance of the City buildings, grounds, right of way, and/or parks as well as assisting with construction activities and special projects. Seasonal Utility Workers may also receive direction from division Maintenance Specialists or Technicians.

Shrub and tree maintenance
  • Pruning

Irrigation maintenance and repair
  • Installation
  • Maintenance
  • Other landscape maintenance duties as assigned
Building maintenance
  • Plumbing
  • Painting
  • Janitorial responsibilities
  • Woodworking
  • Other maintenance and construction duties as assigned
Equipment maintenance
  • Safety inspection
  • Grease and oil
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Mower blade inspection
Public interaction
  • Respond to questions from the public about recreation programs, facilities, and schedules
  • Provide direction to the public concerning safety issues related to the use of park facilities
  • Provide assistance in user conflict situations

  • Seek out answers to questions first; if unsuccessful provide name/contact information of someone who can assist. 
  • Listen, understand, and clarify to gain in depth understanding of the needs to ensure they are being met.
  • Address difficult or contentious issues in a constructive manner.
  • Be positive and enthusiastic when speaking with customers.

  • Provide prompt and reliable service.
  • Respond to phone/email as soon as possible.
  • Follow through in a timely manner on commitments made to customers and provide estimated timeline for completion.
  • Change voicemail and email when out of office/unavailable and provide alternate contact person for customers.

  • Exhibit problem-solving skills leading to sound judgment and quality decisions.

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. 
Experience: No experience required, but preferred.
Required certifications: Valid driver license, ability to obtain (training provided) Flagging certificate.
Desirable certifications: Public Pesticide Applicators License and Commercial Drivers License

For safety purposes, candidates must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to learn city procedures, regulations, and requirements with respect to procurement, safety, operations, and organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of landscape and recreation facility maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safety standards, practices, and procedures relating to all facets of grounds and facility maintenance.
Working Environment: Work is performed in the field at all city grounds and facilities regardless of weather conditions. The fieldwork occurs in the developed areas as well as areas under construction.
 
Physical Requirements: Lifting up to 75 pounds. Bending, standing, and kneeling. Driving city vehicles including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment.

Cognitive Requirements: Ability to work independently.

Tools/Equipment Used: Operates various types of equipment, including but not limited to: riding mowers, walk-behind mowers, tractors with front bucket with attachments, flail mower, rotary tiller, box scraper, fertilizer spreader and mower, backhoes, utility vehicles, dump trucks, weedeaters, grass trimmers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, generators, compressors, and various hand tools.
