What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vegetation Management Supervisor position at City of Winston-Salem?
Performs difficult supervisory work overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Grounds Maintenance Section and performs administrative work related to all aspects of supervision, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Vegetation Management Director.

- Manages daily Directs and oversees the activities of Grounds Maintenance operations – mowing, weed eating, edging, and litter collections.
- Monitors, evaluates, and oversees the City’s contract mowing.
- Develops and maintains maintenance standards; productivity and efficiency standards; maintenance and care of equipment; prepares specifications for new equipment.
- Oversees personnel within the grounds section – evaluations, hiring, employee recognition and other personnel actions.
- Develops and carries out workplace safety training; oversees snow/ice removal efforts downtown.
- Assists the Administrative Secretary by keeping up with employee’s time, personnel actions and record keeping.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of City policies and procedures; knowledge of Microsoft Office software; thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance and operations; ability to prepare and oversee budgets; thorough knowledge of safety and work practices; thorough knowledge of maintenance and care of equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and members of the public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED with coursework in horticulture, forestry, turf management, forestry, landscape or related field and moderate experience in turf management, pesticide application, supervision, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and sitting, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
