We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Civil Engineer I, working with the Department of Engineering.  The ideal candidate will perform a variety of skilled work as it relates to an engineering environment. 


Under basic supervision, depending on assignment, this job classification performs professional engineering and administrative work in the overall study, operational analysis, design, program development, plan review, construction and inspection of various public and private development projects.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with planning, designing, reviewing, and coordinating activities involving construction of various City infrastructure for compliance with established City, State and Federal codes, laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Reviews reports, plans, and specifications for public and private construction projects, including resolving technical engineering problems and assuring their efficient and economical development and construction.

  • Prepares cost estimates for a variety of infrastructure projects including street improvements, traffic control facilities, storm sewer construction, water mains, and sanitary sewer extensions.

  • Confers with contractors and field personnel on construction and planning problems encountered in the field; provides technical expertise.

  • Evaluates and analyzes technical issues, develops solutions, and writes analytical reports.
  • Researches and responds to inquiries and concerns raised by citizens, the public, City Council, other City departments, and outside agencies.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.

  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; AND one year of experience with civil engineering projects; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

 

Knowledge of: 
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, and regional ordinances governing civil engineering.
  • Practices, theory, and principles of civil engineering.
  • Technical principles of traffic engineering, transportation planning, mathematics, and physics.
  • Materials, methods, and techniques utilized in the construction, maintenance and operation of transportation, storm water, intelligent transportation systems and utilities facilities and projects.


Skill in:

  • Applying engineering principles and theory to solve problems.
  • Developing, coordinating, and reviewing technical studies, engineering data, and construction documentation for construction plans and specifications, design, details, cost estimates, bids, consultant agreements, and change orders.
  • Preparing and understanding comprehensive and complex technical reports related to a wide variety of civil engineering projects.
  • Reviewing and assisting in the preparation of legal descriptions and maps for purpose of right-of-way acquisition or disposition, and development
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other agencies and City staff.
  • Operating computers utilizing standard and specialized software, including GIS and other software used in civil design, transportation system modeling, planning, mapping, and statistical analysis.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

A valid Arizona State Driver’s License is required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment. May occasionally be required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.

Salary : $70,293 - $91,381
