JOB DESCRIPTION
Accountant with thorough knowledge of the principles, theories, techniques, procedures and application of current accounting and auditing practices, including cost accounting for a governmental operation, as they apply to that system of accounting currently being used by school districts as prescribed by applicable laws and statutes.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Performs professional accounting and financial management activities in a complex automated accounting environment;
Participates in financial operations such as accounts payable; payroll; maintenance of complex automated accounting records, preparation of financial statements and reports;
Participates in the preparation of statistical statements, studies and forecasts, to assist in long-range planning objectives by administration;
Assists in monitoring and controlling the expenditure of funds to ensure cost control within allocated cost accounts; recommends the transfer of funds as needs.
Participates in the preparation of schedules and financial statements required in the year end closing
process;
Assists in the preparation for audits, responses to audit reports and compiles supporting documentation
required by regulatory authorities;
Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar,
email and Finance Manager software in performing work assignments;
Performs incidental and related fiscal functions to ensure smooth and effective departmental financial
operations.
Qualifications
Provisional Appointment - Subject to Civil Service Eaxamination
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s or Masters degree or higher with a major/concentration in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Economics or a closely related field, which included a minimum of 24 credits in accounting. CPA preferred but not required.
OR
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college or university with an Associate’s degree with a major in accounting and six (6) years of accounting experience*;
* Note: Only experience gained after attaining the minimum education level indicated in B above will be
considered in evaluating experience.
