What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Clinic Medical Assistant position at Clara Barton Hospital & Clinics?
PURPOSE
Responsibilities include assisting Physicians, Mid-level practitioners, and medical students with patient care when needed and in a relief role to other nursing staff members. This includes preparing patients and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, making lab and x-ray appointments, assisting with immunization shots, and explaining the preparations to the patients.
FUNCTIONS
- Represent Clara Barton Medical Clinic in a professional manner in all written/verbal/electronic communication and interactions with the public
- Assist the Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner with patients. Prepare patients and examination rooms, take initial medical history for the chart, take vital signs, make lab and x-ray appointments, and explain the preparations to the patients
- Assist Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner in all special procedures including minor surgery, as required
- Remove sutures, clean wounds, and apply dressings as directed by Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
- Notify patients of lab results as requested by Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
- Responsible for lab work consisting of hematocrits, U/A dips, and preparations for microscope
- Wash and dry used instruments and prepare sterilization, as required
- Receive and handle patient and other phone calls as directed by the Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
- Assist in the proper handling and storage of all medications stored in the office
- Complete physical forms and referral arrangements
- Assist in maintaining medical records in accordance with office procedures
- Keep examination and treatment rooms clean and properly stocked with supplies
- Assist in cleaning and checking for expired medications in the medication drug sample closet monthly.

- Assist front office as time allows
- Perform other duties, as needed and/or directed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current CNA / Medical Assistant Certification
- Current BLS certification
