Surgical Clinic Medical Assistant

PURPOSE

Responsibilities include assisting Physicians, Mid-level practitioners, and medical students with patient care when needed and in a relief role to other nursing staff members. This includes preparing patients and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, making lab and x-ray appointments, assisting with immunization shots, and explaining the preparations to the patients.

FUNCTIONS

1. Represent Clara Barton Medical Clinic in a professional manner in all written/verbal/electronic communication and interactions with the public
2. Assist the Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner with patients. Prepare patients and examination rooms, take initial medical history for the chart, take vital signs, make lab and x-ray appointments, and explain the preparations to the patients
3. Assist Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner in all special procedures including minor surgery, as required
4. Remove sutures, clean wounds, and apply dressings as directed by Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
5. Notify patients of lab results as requested by Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
6. Responsible for lab work consisting of hematocrits, U/A dips, and preparations for microscope
7. Wash and dry used instruments and prepare sterilization, as required
8. Receive and handle patient and other phone calls as directed by the Physician and/or Mid-level practitioner
9. Assist in the proper handling and storage of all medications stored in the office
10. Complete physical forms and referral arrangements
11. Assist in maintaining medical records in accordance with office procedures
12. Keep examination and treatment rooms clean and properly stocked with supplies
13. Assist in cleaning and checking for expired medications in the medication drug sample closet monthly.
14. Assist in calling in pharmacy prescriptions and refills, as time
15. Assist front office as time allows
16. Perform other duties, as needed and/or directed
