External Communications Strategist
This role executes an enterprise-wide strategy for communicating activities in company news, organizational communications, community announcements, corporate events and crisis management across the country. The Communications Strategist uses a variety of communications skills, competencies, and tools to support efforts to inform and educate the public about the Company and further advance its reputation. This position helps execute the External Communications strategy enterprise-wide under guidance from the External Communications Lead and may mentor and guide other communications team members with their projects, handle daily review and approval of related content pieces and owns direct relationships with leaders across the company to support public relations, thought leadership and event initiatives.
External Communications Strategist Primary Functions:
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate public events and thought leadership opportunities.
- Develop, organize, and execute external communications projects and events.
- Regularly collaborates with external partners on public events and opportunities.
- Attend events and thought leadership opportunities when needed to provide support and assist with event execution.
- Develop video concepts.
- Develop messaging for and assist with enterprise-wide public leadership engagements, presentations, interviews, and speeches.
- Inform and educate the public about company news, organizational communications, community announcements, corporate events, and crisis management.
- Work directly with leadership on communications during PR crises.
- Partner with various communications task forces throughout the company to execute specific communications.
- Regularly hosts and leads meetings with various stakeholders about communications strategy.
- Regularly works with, or presents to, leaders across the company to train on speaking best practices and align on messaging for public relations.
- Make sure all work follows editorial policies and standards.
- Coordinate the preparation of company publications and articles by confirming artwork, verifying facts, and giving final approval; obtain supporting media assets for PR, event and social media efforts as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
External Communications Strategist Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field; or equivalent practical experience.
- 1-2 years of related experience in Corporate Communications, events, or PR / Communications required; 2-3 years of related experience preferred.
- Must have proven knowledge and experience with communication and AP style writing.
- Proven business experience in communications and project management
- Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be a confident self-starter and be adept at both independent and collaborative teamwork styles
- Attention to detail, strong organizational ability; ability to work under pressure amid distractions and interruptions.
- Confidence in public speaking
- Experience in building and guiding teams is highly preferred
- Creative and strategic
- Graphic design, video and photography skills are a plus.
- Strategic communications planning and program execution experience is highly preferred
- Ability to communicate, interview and connect with people to generate stories.
