Job Summary:

CleanJoule is seeking an experienced Principal Scientist for leading development of industrial prokaryotic strains to enable successful scale up of fermentative production of high-value chemicals.

The work performed for this position will occur on-site and preference will be given to local candidates.

Job Responsibilities:

• Design, execute, and analyze strain construction and strain improvement strategies to produce chemicals of interest through engineered metabolic pathways.
• Deliver prokaryotic strains that are capable of efficient production of chemicals of interest at industrial scales at low cost.
• Expedite process improvement and optimization with innovative technical solutions.
• Apply advanced statistical tools and write experimental reports for supporting business and R&D needs.
• Use technical writing expertise to author proposals and reports for internal and external research clients.
• Design and execute analytical protocols to quantify and qualify cultured organisms as well as products produced.
• Other job duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

• PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a degree in a related discipline.

Experience and Knowledge

• 5 years of experience (post-PhD) working in an industrial research laboratory.
• Prior experience in the engineering of metabolic pathways in prokaryotic microorganisms.
• Experience in industrial prokaryotic strain improvement leading to successful scale-up in industrial fermentation setting.
• Experience with common molecular biology techniques: SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, PCR, transformation, plasmid construction, etc.
• Experience with advanced molecular biology techniques: Whole plasmid sequencing, pathway balancing, genomic integration, construction of metabolic circuits etc.
• Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools and web-based applications is required.
• Prior experience successfully participating in work teams where personal accountability, attention to detail, collaboration, and results were required is essential.
• Demonstrated excellent written communication skills through intellectual property authorship or funded grant applications.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands:

Frequent lifting and moving of items up to 25 pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies. Personal protective equipment is provided by the company and its use is mandatory.
