Where you will work

The Augusta mill sits along the Savannah River, on the state border between Georgia and South Carolina and manufactures light, medium, and heavy weight coated paperboard. It is a well-invested SBS paperboard manufacturing facility with approximately 600 thousand tons of capacity.  This facility boasts over 700 employees and has been in operation for almost 65 years.  Located on 3,000 acres, the Augusta site operates two paper machines that produce 1,940 tons per day.  The Augusta Mill is Clearwater Paper’s largest paperboard facility and critical to the success of our strategy and future.

What you will do

The Mechanical Maintenance Manufacturing Supervisor drives improved equipment reliability by ensuring all installations/repairs are completed with quality workmanship and per best maintenance practices. The supervisor will assist with the development of solutions to repetitive failures and all other problems that adversely affect plant operations. 

Operational Leadership

  • Direct responsibility for hourly Mechanical Maintenance personnel.
  • Coordinates with Maintenance Planners to ensure that all preventive maintenance activities are scheduled and completed.
  • Initiates work orders and actions to correct unsafe conditions.
  • Attends daily maintenance planning and coordination meetings to help prioritize scheduled work and efficiently handle “break-in” work as necessary.
  • Provides technical assistance and creative thinking during planning and coordination meetings to deliver the most cost-effective solutions to mechanical and instrumentation issues.
  • Prioritizes work to be performed by the General Mechanics; consulting with Reliability/Planning Engineers on work to be contracted to outside services.
  • Works with the reliability group to ensure that downtime preventive maintenance programs or permanent mechanical equipment modifications are put in place to address the “root cause(s)” of downtime and quality issues.
  • Schedules work assignments, vacations, and addresses other personnel issues for the Utilities Department maintenance personnel.
  • Assists in the development and execution of the “outage” planning strategy.
  • Collaborates with operators to understand operational issues as well as process and equipment opportunities.
  • Mentor and coach operations/maintenance personnel on the technical fundamentals as appropriate.
  • Drives to improve Maintenance Key Performances Indicators (KPIs)

Safety and Environmental

  • Provide regular inspections of work areas to assure that good housekeeping practices are followed and that all department area maintenance facilities and tools are kept in good repair.
  • Instruct and lead crew in safe work practices in pursuit of zero injuries.
  • Verify that all safety recordkeeping is done in a timely manner.
  • Ensure structured, constructive safety meetings are conducted and follow up on resolutions for those items of concern which are brought up in safety meeting
  • Plan, coordinate and execute electrical repairs on overhead crane and lifting devices and monthly inspections as scheduled.
  • Fully support the mill’s behavior-based safety program and assure that area maintenance employees are given the necessary time required for making safety observations.

What you will need

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred
  • 3-5 years of leadership / supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • Powerhouse/Recovery Boiler experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with reliability-focused maintenance.
  • Skilled in utilization of Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), preferably JDE.
  • Multi-tasking skills with the ability to meet deadlines on a continuous basis.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Project, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to estimate man-hours and costs for maintenance work.
  • Strong leader, team player, and communicator.
  • High-speed manufacturing environment, sustained exposure to high-frequency noises, multiple hours standing, walking on concrete surfaces
  • Personal Protective Equipment is required in the mill environment.
  • Dirt, noise, odor, & temperature extremes.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals used in manufacturing process
  • Able to work a 12-hour rotating shift which includes nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
