The Laboratory Technical Supervisor is responsible for providing technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory, ensuring high-quality testing and compliance with CLIA standards. This role must be accessible to the laboratory for on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation, as needed, to provide supervision


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Selects test methodologies appropriate for the clinical use of test results.
  • Verifies test procedures and establishing the laboratory’s test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
  • Enrolls and participates in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program commensurate with services offered.
  • Establishes and maintains a quality control program tailored to the testing performed, setting parameters for acceptable analytic performance and ensuring these standards are upheld throughout the testing process—from specimen receipt to result reporting.
  • Resolves technical problems and ensuring remedial actions are implemented when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Ensures patient test results are reported only after corrective actions are completed and the test system is functioning properly.
  • Identifies training needs and ensuring all testing personnel receive regular in-service training and education appropriate to the complexity of laboratory services.
  • Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel to ensure accurate, prompt, and proficient test performance and reporting, including:
    • Direct observation of routine patient test performance (e.g., patient preparation, specimen handling, processing, and testing).
    • Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results.
    • Reviewing intermediate test results, worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records.
    • Observing performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.
    • Assessing test performance using previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing, or external proficiency testing samples.
    • Evaluating problem-solving skills.
  • Evaluates and documents the performance of individuals conducting high-complexity testing at least semiannually during their first year of patient testing, and annually thereafter.
  • Checks and responds to work e-mail on a regular basis throughout the workday.
  • Participates in and completes all required trainings and in-services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, plus at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing; OR
  • A master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, plus at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, plus at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing.
  • Must have knowledge of Internet and Microsoft Office software (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook).
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including exceptional customer service.
  • Must be able to provide clear and effective guidance to others.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with doctors, clinical staff, other co-workers and the public.
  • Must be able to lead and coordinate work efforts effectively.
  • Must be able to work individually as well as within a team.
  • Must be able to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Must be able to respond with patience and understanding during stressful conditions related to patient health and emergent situations.
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Must demonstrate extreme attention to detail.
  • Must possess strong organization skills.
  • Must be able to problem solve and use reasoning.
  • Must be able to meet predefined quality standards.
  • Must maintain and project a professional attitude and appearance at all time.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the healthcare field and medical specialty, as well as medical terminology.
  • Must have knowledge of technical operations, safe work practices, and applicable tools and equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of applicable standards for high-complexity laboratory testing (e.g., CLIA regulations).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical chemistry, urinalysis, or related high complexity testing specialties.
  • Prior supervisory or training experience in a CLIA-certified laboratory setting.

Driving/Travel:

The employee must have reliable transportation. While the primary workplace may be closest to the employee’s home, work assignments could be in any of the Company’s locations.
