Cleve J. Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill is seeking a Public Services Specialist to create a positive experience for each library customer. The successful candidate will actively assist customers at our circulation desk by locating items, checking out and returning materials, providing instruction of print and non-print resources, providing support for use of library equipment and aide customers in finding answers to their questions. This candidate must possess excellent customer service skills, knowledge of basic computer functions and software and the ability to demonstrate tact and professionalism in communications. EOE.
*This position is required to work one weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday).
Essential Functions:
- Creates positive experiences for library customers by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks
- Demonstrates superior public service skills, and an understanding of public library operations. Supports “customer first” practices. Proactively seeks to assist customers with finding items. Circulates the library floor regularly while performing other work duties to actively assist customers. Demonstrates tact and professionalism in all communications. Provides accurate information and directional assistance
- Proficiently performs reference tasks including but not limited to: opening and closing procedures, provides instruction of print and non-print resources; provides library tours; provides basic circulation functions, collects fees; evaluates donations of materials; maintains the overall appearance of the library, operates cash register and credit card machine accurately when receiving payments and making change
- Assists customers by analyzing inquiries, answering questions, identifying informational sources, recommending materials, and instructing the use of resources
- Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, administration and volunteers; in the absence of the department manager supervises the circulation pages and volunteers assisting with the tasks of circulation
- Assists customers with library equipment including the use of e-readers and e-book technology
- Serves as librarian-in-charge as needed; responsibilities may include but are not limited to directing customers in emergency situations
- Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, administration, and volunteers; in the absence of the department manager supervises the volunteers assisting with the tasks in reference
- Markets library programs and events through discussion and distribution of materials and registers customers for programs
- Attends staff, county, and other professional meetings. Participates in and strengthens library and branch teams. Complies with continuing education requirements. Stays current with Cumberland County Library System and Cleve J. Fredricksen Library policies and procedures
- Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the supervisor’s discretion
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must possess excellent customer service skills; Requires the ability to handle customer complaints, difficult situations, and the challenges presented by customers
- Knowledge of computer functions and software; Must be able to learn and become skilled with library equipment, technology, and software as required to effectively and efficiently perform essential functions
- Ability to demonstrate tact and professionalism in all communications
Education:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Previous customer service experience preferred
Hours: Monday 8:30am - 1, Tuesday 8:30 - 5, Thursday 9am - 5, Friday 1pm - 5, and monthly weekend rotation 12:30pm - 5
Employment Clearances: Must have or obtain FBI criminal history, Pennsylvania Child Abuse, and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History clearance prior to the position start date that qualifies the individual for employment as outlined in the library system’s Employee Clearances policy.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work regularly demands light physical effort in the handling of materials, boxes, carts, or equipment, as well as manual dexterity and visual acuity when working with a computer. Regularly lifts and carries books and materials weighing as much as 30 pounds; regularly pushes and pulls carts; regularly bends and reaches for books on top and bottom shelves; regularly uses repetitive movements and views small print when assisting patrons with searches on the computer. Work may require standing for extended periods of time.
