There is always something new to learn as the field of ophthalmology continues to grow and advance. Ophthalmic Assistants provide vision care under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist and assist with taking patient histories, performing diagnostic tests and procedures, patient scheduling, and exam room preparation.
A caregiver in this position works 7:30am – 4:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties and perform basic/advanced patient care as directed by a physician or supervisor.
Receive and prepare patients for examination and treatment under the direction of a supervisor, physician and/or technician.
Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties for high acuity patient populations, patients who have been admitted to the hospital and/or critical care patients.
Perform routine screening tests and document patient information in the patient medical record.
Stock and maintain exam rooms with equipment and supplies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
One year of experience in an ophthalmic setting providing direct patient care. Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all the required experience.
Knowledge of ophthalmic sub-specialties and testing procedures.

Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
- May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
- Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
