Nord Family Network Director’s Fellowship in Publications

The editorial internship offers an English, art history, or communications undergraduate or recent graduate a chance to learn about the role of the editor in an art museum through hands-on experience with museum texts and exposure to the workflows of the associate, senior, and managing editors. The intern will be introduced to processes of editing for any of the following: museum publications, gallery didactics, and various ephemera, through projects assigned to them and through weekly meetings with the other editors. The intern will primarily edit ephemera such as blogs, web text, wayfinding materials, and signage for clarity and consistency to comply with specified style manuals and to connect with a variety of audiences.

The intern will deliver a first pass of edits in Chicago style (using the Chicago manual and examples in the genre) on a set of magazine articles in Word (up to 10,000 words), then a second pass as PDF comments. Additional projects may include similar edits on blogs, web text, wayfinding materials, and other ephemera both printed and digital. The intern will also participate in meetings where higher-level editorial projects such as exhibition didactics and publications are discussed.

The intern will leave the internship with a portfolio of work including tracked-changes edits on and completed samples of the above genres. The intern can learn to balance multiple project timelines at once, practice writing queries on projects of various genres to writers across the museum, and work with staff editors to learn more about the role of editing in the museum field.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, applicants must:

  • Be an upper-level undergraduate.
  • Be pursuing a degree in English, a communications field, or art history along with some experience in writing or editing in academic settings.
  • Be willing to adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style along with other house style guides.

Additional Eligibility Considerations

  • Additional writing or editing experience for nonacademic texts is a plus. Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus.

Required Application Materials

  • Resume and cover letter are required. Samples of previous editing work (showing track changes and editorial queries) are welcomed.

Application Deadline: March 28th, 2025
