What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Driver Trainee position at Clover Park School District?
Training Pay Rate: $24.00/hr
SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT:
Under the instruction of the Director of Transportation or his/her designee, this trainee will acquire training through a 6-week course (up to 6 weeks or 240 hours - maximum) to become a substitute bus driver. This position is subject to FHWA drug & alcohol testing as provided by District Policy 5259.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: (Mandatory attendance required for all necessary stages.)
Stage 1 – Driver’s permit assistance (unpaid)
- Applicant secures driver’s commercial learner’s permit (CLP) within first week.
- Onsite assistance is available (unpaid).
Stage 2 – Classroom & behind-the-wheel training (Paid training)
- Paid classroom training from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
Stage 3 – Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Testing
- Obtain class B CDL with P & S endorsements.
- Vehicle inspection test
- Skills test
- Road test
Clover Park transports trainee to examination site.
Stage 4 – Upon successful completion of Stages 1-3, qualified trainee could be recommended for substitute bus driver position at $24.01 per hour.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
1. Ability to demonstrate dependability in work attendance and punctuality.2. Ability to practice defensive driving at all times, and display courtesy to other vehicle operators.3. Ability to operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State School Bus Specification. 4. Ability to operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies publicized by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.5. Ability to operate a school bus in various types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice. 6. Ability to complete legible and accurate forms, records, timesheets, reports and other clerical type activities as may be required by the state or district policies and procedures. 7. Ability to foster and maintain positive, productive and cooperative working relationships with District staff and stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and 5 years of driving experience.
- Requires high school diploma or GED.
- Acceptable driving record as defined in WAC 392-144-103 (2)(3). Driving record free of all major violations such as DWI or negligent driving, with a limited number of minor violations.
- Physically able to perform daily, routine school bus vehicle safety inspections; necessary emergency road services; use all hand and/or foot-operated controls and equipment found on state minimum specified school buses and maneuver and control a school bus under all driving conditions.
- Possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to provide assistance to students as they enter or exit a school bus through passenger service door or while evacuating the bus during an emergency. Have no physical limitations which would prevent satisfactory performance of job duties.
