GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Product Compliance and Safety spearheads the Company’s product safety and regulatory compliance efforts as a global manufacturer of consumer-oriented low-speed vehicles powered by electric, gas, and diesel systems. This role collaborates with engineering, product management, operations, and legal teams to enhance safety across diverse powertrains, integrate consumer-focused features and accessories, and establish best practices for meeting applicable regulations and standards. The Director drives initiatives to ensure products are safe, reliable, and compliant, aligning with the Company’s strategic goals and market leadership objectives.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Effectively Partner with other functions to prioritize and ensure alignment with the Company’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with professionals across teams to foster a culture of excellence and accountability, providing guidance and expertise without direct supervision.
  • Define and drive the strategic vision for the product compliance and safety function while overseeing its daily operations.
  • Develop and execute a compliance and safety management framework and ensure full integration into the company's new product development system and other business processes.
  • Actively participate in standards development committees, industry trade associations, and other safety and compliance related organizations and educate, train, and lead internal compliance efforts.
  • Monitor advancements in vehicle safety, battery technologies, and regulatory landscapes to inform long-term strategies.
  • Engage with regulatory bodies and industry groups to influence standards impacting low-speed electric vehicles.

Process Improvement & Governance:

  • . Design, implement, and refine processes, policies, and methodologies to enhance compliance and safety outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance, reporting, and project documentation standards.
  • Oversee the investigation and documentation of product safety incidents, ensuring thorough resolution and resporting
  • Manage CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliance program for products sold into California.
  • Establish battery safety protocols, including testing and disposal, to address risks unique to electric vehicles.
  • Lead recall management processes, coordinating with operations and legal teams as needed.

Risk Management:

  • Lead the identification, assessment, and mitigation of product safety risks, including failure modes and effects analyses.
  • Participate in periodic design reviews to ensure products meet applicable safety standards.
  • Proactively address challenges, escalating issues to senior management as needed to ensure timely resolution.
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of supporting documentation and compliance certificates for products.

Stakeholder Communication & Reporting:

  • Serve as main point of contact between product and business stakeholders for product compliance and safety-related matters.
  • Work with product teams to communicate safety and compliance requirements for new products. Ensure emerging standards are considered in multi-year product roadmaps.
  • Provide executive-level reporting and regular review regarding safety and compliance of Club Car products.

Resource & Budget Management:

  • Oversee resource allocation, ensuring optimal use of function resources.
  • Work with legal, finance, and other functions to manage department / project budgets, ensure financial control, and track project expenditures.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 25% travel required
  • May be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Collaborate with third-party accessory vendors to ensure their products meet company safety and compliance standards for integration.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or similar technical field is required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in safety or compliance (e.g. CSP, PE) are a plus.

Experience:

  • Proven expertise in mechanical and electrical systems, with experience in vehicle design or powertrain development (electric, gas, or diesel) preferred.
  • Experience managing safety and compliance for customizable or accessory-heavy products in automotive, consumer electronics, or a related field.
  • Strong verbal and written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with business functions and leaders, as well as external stakeholders, to drive strategic alignment in product compliance and safety
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in legal, engineering, procurement, finance, and manufacturing.
