Volunteer: Someone who has experienced homelessness and is willing to admit it.

Coalition to End Homelessness
Fort Lauderdale, FL Volunteer
POSTED ON 4/26/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/25/2025
The Coalition provides a number of services for people, including children, experiencing homelessness. We are a volunteer led and operated organization. Everyone you meet here will probably be a volunteer, many of them serving many hours a month. This is not a one and done. We find that our best volunteers are those who care deeply about helping people experiencing homelessness. Those not passionate about the cause tend to move along at some point or get easily overwhelmed by other thing in life. Most people are attracted to our "Pay the Rent First" Program which provides first, last, and security to homeless families. All our family mentors are volunteers who are able to help mostly single mothers and young children get settled. Other priorities are assistance with fundraising, so we can house more families, education programs for specific groups and for members of the public, collaboration with other like-minded groups, advocacy, and volunteer training and development. Whatever your skill set, if you have time to help us, we can find work for you to do that will make a meaningful difference. We were incorporated in 1989 and received our 501(c)3 in 1992. Over the years our work has changed and will continue to be responsive to community needs. I will end by telling you that we desperately need volunteers for many different positions (except feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving or Christmas or any other day). Whatever your skills, if you have time to contribute and care about the cause, we can use you.

The Coalition to End Homelessness is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven, organization with a mission to "End Homelessness through changing lives".

This is a volunteer opportunity that comes with a small stipend. You may be interested in the exact amount. After reading the entire opportunity, you may reach me at lh@homelessfl.org and I will give you more details.

We believe it is important to include people who have experienced homelessness at all levels of our organization. We are currently looking for Volunteers who have prior homeless experience. The ideal candidate was homeless at some time, is willing to admit it, and is now financially secure with secure housing.

This opportunity requires working four hours per week for a year, or 8 hours per week for six months or 20 hours a week for three months as this site suggests. We hope this volunteer will work more than the required hours and continue working with us after the volunteer period has ended.

This opportunity is annual and if you like working with us and we like working with you it is available every year. Committed volunteers usually turn into meeting Chairs or Vice-Chairs and eventually (after a couple of years) end up serving on our board. Currently we have ten board members, three of which have experienced homelessness. I may pick some skills and interests in this website form, but anyone who is committed, reliable, and passionately cares about homelessness and affordable housing would be considered. Ideally you will be able to use a computer and have access to Zoom or Teams. This opportunity could be done virtually if you are not local, however supervision and training will be more difficult. We are a volunteer-led organization with only one paid employee so we need volunteers for every aspect of the organization.

The volunteer who has experienced homelessness will be asked to attend the Client Serices meeting the second Wednesday of every month on Teams or Zoom. That is the only fixed time you must work at this point. If you choose to work eight hours a week for six months, you can choose the dates and times you want to work. For example 4 00 to 8 00p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We do ask that once you come up with a schedule that works for you, you attempt to stick to this schedule. If you must miss a day due to sickness or family obligations you must tell us as soon as you know, and you must make up the time you did not work. You can participate in meetings with your cell phone. We would prefer that you have a monitor, camera, and earphones. You will be expected to show up to all meetings that occur during your volunteer period as well as commit to taking on tasks that need to be done to support the committee.

If you choose to pursue this opportunity you should be able to work independently, reliably, and take your commitments seriously. This is not a position for someon who wants to get some funds and play around. You will be contacted often and during your work hours (which are flexible) you be expected to answer email and phone calls. If you are tasked with a project, weekly updates will be required.

We are grateful to Volunteer Match for all the great volunteers who have been sent our way and are continuing to work hard to help those less fortunate. Nevertheless, only about 1 in 10 people who contact us to volunteer actuallty follow through. About one in five never complete our online Volunteer application and for those that do, many do not show up the first day, or show up several times and disappear. These actions actually harm the homeless we serve by wasting our few resources. I do not mean to discourage you but to be very clear that if you sometimes have trouble finishing what you start, or have difficulty being ontime, this position is not for you.
