Coast Electric is currently seeking a GIS Technician II to the GIS Section of the Engineering Department by providing GIS and computer-aided drafting skills, field check verification, and assistance with other special projects that may arise for Coast Electric Power Association ("Coast Electric") and CoastConnect, LLC ("CoastConnect").

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The GIS Technician will operate the Coast Electric's Geographical Information System ("GIS"), and Customer Information System (CIS). Monitor and validate the merging of facilities and consumer data between the databases of these systems.

Query and modify data using ArcMap, Access, Excel, SQL, and related programs that are utilized in the daily operations of the GIS and Engineering department. Update maps according to work orders complying with construction specifications, on the GIS system and hard copy maps. Assist in updating maps as system expansion occurs using subdivision plats and aerial photography. Assist in field checks for facility verification and GPS data collection. Draft new pole construction specifications according to RUS guidelines; makes necessary changes to existing specifications. Draft system study maps reflecting proposed and existing conditions for Construction Work Plan. Draft design drawings of new and existing substations for RUS approval and contractor bids. Assist in managing data for a national join use notification system (NJUNS). Assist in managing data for scheduled updates sent to Mississippi 811. Operate an engineering copy machine and plotter as copies of maps a needed. Use standard drafting equipment. Assist GIS Specialist with support on all CoastConnect matters.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Mississippi driver's license is required.
  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in Geography, Geographical Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Additional related experience may be substituted for the required education at the discretion of Coast Electric.
  • This position requires experience with a Geographical Information System, Computer aided drafting system, network operating systems and the operation and maintenance of plotters, printers, digitizer, and other computer peripherals.
  • Experience related to working with a GIS and computer-aided graphics system with related hardware and software is preferred.
  • Experience using ESRI's ArcMap, Auto Desk applications, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL, and other standard database management software is preferred.
  • An understanding of basic circuit diagrams, drafting techniques, computer operation and the basics of record keeping are essential.
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills. Must be skilled in the operation of computers.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel to perform surveying and measuring duties. Must be able to sit for extended periods to time to perform computer functions. Must be able to reach, grasp, and use fingers to perform computer and surveying duties. Must be able to lift 20 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Must be able to reach, handle, work with fingers, and feel. Must be able to speak and listen and have an effective and persuasive speaking voice when answering the phone and working with other employees. Must possess visual acuity and manual dexterity. Must be able to drive a company vehicle.
