Position: Camp and Enrichment Assistant 

Status:  Regular, PT-Time, Non-Exempt-Seasonal expanded hours (40 per week) 

Hours:   

  • March 1-May 31: Between 12-30 hours per week 
  • Mondays and Wednesdays 11-5:30 Required 
  • Additional hours based on need and availability 
  • June 1-August 31: 40 Hours per Week 
  • Monday-Friday as early as 7:15am and as late at 5:20 pm 
  • September 1 and beyond-Variable Hours 

Reports to: Education Manager

  

Position Overview 


The Camp and Enrichment Assistant will support the planning and implementation of Jewish and Farm educational programming and events for Coastal Roots Farm. The Camp and Enrichment Assistant works closely with the Education Manager to design content and curricula, deliver a wide array of educational programming and community events, and support the administrative functions of the Education Department as it relates to Enrichment Programming (Seasonal Farm Camps and After School on the Farm). As the education team grows, the Camp and Enrichment Assistant will provide assistance to the Education Manager with training and supporting full-time and part-time educators in the implementation of Jewish-based enrichment programming for youth ages 3 and up.

Coastal Roots Farm is a nonprofit community farm and education center guided by Jewish values. The Farm’s mission is to cultivate healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom.  


The Farm’s impact initiatives include 1) regenerative agriculture, 2) equitable food access, 3) environmental education, and 4) Jewish life. We grow organic food in a climate-smart way, donate the majority of our harvests to those who need it most, inspire youth to be the next generation of environmental stewards, and connect people of all backgrounds to Jewish holidays, values, and traditions through farming and food.  


Jewish values guide the Farm’s Jewish values include Adam v’Adamah (Interdependence), Tikkun Olam (Repair), Arevut (Mutual Care), Peleh (Wonder), Kodesh (Sacred Time), which inform our strategy, approach, and priorities.  


Coastal Roots Farm is located in Encinitas, CA on approximately 18 acres of land which we recognize as indigenous to the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples. Coastal Roots Farm was incubated by the Leichtag Foundation in 2014 and received 501(c)(3) public charity status in 2015. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Support the Education Manager and other staff to create, coordinate, implement, and evaluate Jewish and Farm educational programs and events for people of all ages, including but not limited to early childhood, teens, adults, seniors, and young and beginning farmers. Priority support for children ages 3-13 years old.  
  • Support in the creation and maintenance of Jewish-rich enrichment programming. Program themes to include Jewish holidays, regenerative farming, Jewish farming and agricultural practices, environmental sustainability, composting, food justice, cooking, and more.  
  • Providing visitors and program participants with educational content about Jewish farm concepts, farm and garden techniques, and environmental stewardship.  
  • Design content and curricula for Coastal Roots Farm enrichment programming. 
  • Manage accounts and data in Camp Brain (digital camp software). Responsibilities include supporting parent communications such as welcome emails and follow up communications; interpreting camper data to synthesize and share with counselors; tracking and reporting on camper information. 
  • Assist with training and provide support to full-time and part-time Educators and volunteers.   

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Attending Farm Team and other relevant meetings, reporting on education and other programming, and coordinating with the Farm Team’s other relevant projects. 
  • Helping with various farm-related projects and being on-call for farm needs.  
  • Integrating Jewish wisdom, teachings, and values to Farm internal meetings and external programs as broadly as possible. 
  • Leading tours of the Farm for outside groups and the general public. 
  • Other duties may also be assigned by a supervisor. 

Required Qualifications and Experiences 

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • At least 1-2 years of experience within the fields of Jewish agricultural and/or general education. 
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and Web-based computing. 
  • Hands-on experience with gardening and/or farming.  
  • Entrepreneurial, adaptable, and creative. 
  • Ability to build and nurture relationships with a wide variety of people, including colleagues, the general public, youth, seniors, funders, etc. 
  • Flexible, able to work simultaneously on wide range of projects and ability to prioritize tasks.  
  • Exceptional listening and communication skills with sensitivity to cultural communication differences.  
  • Cooperative, service-oriented attitude. Team player and leader. 
  • Works well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to lift at least 25lbs. 

Preferred Qualifications/Experience 

  • A relevant college degree preferred (i.e. Education, Environmental Studies, Jewish Studies, etc.). 
  • Teaching credentials strongly preferred. 
  • Understanding of agricultural, Jewish and/or Jewish agricultural concepts that may be relevant to the content of a Jewish Community Farm. 
  • Knowledge of Jewish traditions, texts, narrative and rituals. 
  • Experience and background in Jewish service learning.  
  • Experience with creative and arts-based Jewish programming (ex: singing, movement, etc.). 

Reporting Relationship 

Reports directly to the Education Manager.  


Compensation 

$20 and up. Compensation to be determined based on experience, skills, education, and training. 


Typical Working Conditions 

The Education Manager will work outdoors and occasionally in the office. There will be exposure to Southern California outside temperatures, chemicals used in the agricultural industry, and loud noises.
