We are seeking experienced applicants to join the Civil Division of the Cochise County Attorney’s Office.  The Civil Division serves as counsel to county government and is a highly collegial office located in Bisbee, AZ.  

Attorneys hoping to improve a work-life balance will find that to be an obtainable goal.  We offer a flex schedule in a location of great weather and little traffic.  Bisbee’s summer temperatures average approximately 85° F., and the winter is mild with an occasional snow day.  Most of the Cochise County Attorney’s Office lives in nearby Sierra Vista, which was recently named by Fortune magazine as a Best Place to Live for Families, and has been rated as the 3rd most affordable housing market in the US.
 
Cochise County has much to offer outdoor enthusiasts.  There is great hiking in the Huachuca Mountains and the Chiricahua Mountains, and Cochise County is the start of the Arizona Trail.  There is rock climbing in the Dragoon Mountains.  The San Pedro River is a top-rated birding location, and Sierra Vista is the hummingbird capitol of the US.  Cochise County’s fantastic weather means outdoor recreation can be enjoyed year-round.

Supervises and reviews the work of staff attorneys serving as Attorney I, II and III.

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only) Initiates, engages, and defends litigation; performs legal research, organizational, and administrative duties; reviews and prepares legal documents; renders legal advice to clients; performs factual investigations; handles appeals; supervises and reviews the work of of staff attorneys serving as Attorney I, II, and III.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from an accredited law school; admission to the State Bar of Arizona; seven (7) years of relevant legal experience; significant trial or litigation experience required; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
 
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to individuals with governmental experience.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Exceptional knowledge of:
  • principles and practices of law;
  • legal procedures and administrative proceedings;                                                    
  • methods and practices of pleadings;
  • judicial procedures and the rules of evidence;
  • principles and practices of management and supervision; 
  • principles, methods, materials, practices, and references utilized in legal research.
 
Considerable skill in:
  • applying legal knowledge and training;
  • determining alternative courses of action; 
  • analyzing, appraising, and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents;
  • rendering logical, clear, and effective written reports and oral arguments; 
  • presenting and arguing cases in court and handle unanticipated problems smoothly.
 
Ability to:
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public;
  • read, write, and speak English;
  • follow written and verbal instruction;
  • communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office or court setting with appropriate climate controls.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential functions of this position require: lifting up to 20 pounds, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
 
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds requires a good deal of walking, standing or involves sitting most of the time.

Mental Application:  Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important.
