In 2023, Coconino County Juvenile Court (CCJC) earned the distinction of becoming the first certified trauma informed juvenile court in the country. The principles and practices of a trauma informed approach guide our work with youth, families, staff, and community members.

Under supervision, the Clinician provides therapeutic interventions to youth in Juvenile Court programs including Probation, Detention, and in other programming and activities.

The Clinician will serve as part of a court team to plan, coordinate and implement treatment programming, and will provide optimal behavioral health services to meet the emotional, social, and mental health needs of youth dealing with a variety of behavioral health issues including substance abuse. Probation, Detention, and Treatment & Programming staff work as collaborative teams to coordinate trauma-informed agency and community-based services to meet the individual needs of each youth and family.

Typical Duties

  • Assists youth and their families as needed with a variety of issues including substance abuse, depression and suicidal ideations, emotional regulation and re-regulation, mental illness, family domestic violence and dysfunction, and effective parenting etc.
  • Conducts initial interviews and provides assessments and evaluations of youth, their parents, and family systems
  • Develops individual and family treatment plans
  • Trains in and implements specific counseling modalities as family-based approaches, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Mindfulness Based Substance Abuse Treatment (Intensive Outpatient Program), Juvenile Sex Offense Specific Treatment, Seeking Safety and other trauma focused therapies for youth and their parents
  • Coordinates and conducts family sessions and promotes family involvement
  • Conducts individual, family, and group therapy sessions
  • Communicates and develops positive working relationships with parents/guardian/custodian regarding the positive development of their son, daughter, or family member
  • Facilitates conflict resolutions as needed
  • Provides consultations and consults with probation officers and other professionals regarding clients’ behavior health issues and needs
  • Provides emergency behavioral health assessments and interventions and works with outside resources to resolve crisis and coordinate care
  • Works with Juvenile Detention Staff in the assessment of behavior health needs of detained youth and assists in determining required level of supervision and care
  • Prepares court reports and court ordered evaluations in a timely manner
  • Appears in court to report client progress
  • Maintains treatment records and Jolts documentation
  • Assists in training new staff as assigned
  • Oversees activities of interns/staff assigned to the program
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: standing and walking; vision acuity (near and far); working with and around others; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in behavioral health field such as social work, counseling, or closely related field and eligibility for licensure through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. If not yet licensed, the Clinician must obtain initial licensure (LMSW, LAC) within 6 months of being hired.

LMSWs and LACs and will receive supervision and support to obtain their independent licensure. Once obtained, the employee is eligible for a 5% increase in salary.

Preferred Qualifications: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or clinical Psychologist in the state of Arizona; training and experience in providing trauma informed counseling/therapy to high-risk youth and their families; 5 years of experience working as a licensed clinician.

This position is exempt from overtime.

  • Principles, methods, and techniques of individual, family, and group counseling
  • Child and adolescent development theories and applications
  • Dynamics of behavioral and emotional problems
  • Trauma related symptoms, needs, and interventions
  • Indications of juveniles with co-occurring disorders, such as substance abuse and related issues
  • Crisis intervention techniques
  • Basic principles and methods of treatment for delinquent and criminogenic behavior
  • Principles of supervision and training for adults
Working knowledge of:
  • Juvenile Court proceedings
  • Human behavior and the various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Secure program procedures and policies
  • Record keeping, documentation and report writing
  • Group activity planning and leadership
Ability to:
  • Communicate and collaborate respectfully with clients, families, coworkers, and community members from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Coordinate the activities of various individuals, agencies, and service providers
  • Analyze complex problems and situations and suggest effective and reasonable courses of action
  • Maintain current licensure and all required training

  • Conduct detailed research and prepare reports and findings
  • Identify and utilize appropriate professional support as needed

  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
