Position Summary:

The individual filling the Principal position ensures efficient operation of the school and a high-quality education for students by overseeing teachers and students. The Principal hires and trains teachers and some other staff, and helps develop and enforce codes and policies for teachers and students to follow. The Principal reports to the Superintendent. The Principal also creates and maintains budgets for the School, in cooperation with the Superintendent and the Business Manager. The Principal works with student families and the School Board to communicate important information and to receive feedback from them. The Principal is also responsible for creation of building and guest policies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate, supervise, and counsel all professional, paraprofessional, administrative and nonprofessional personnel attached to the school
  • Assist in the development, revision and evaluation of the curriculum and master teaching schedules
  • Oversee the implementation and observance of staff and student policies and regulations
  • Report to the Superintendent significant issues regarding implementation and observance of staff and student policies and regulations, and work closely with the Superintendent to resolve those issues
  • Work closely with teachers and other academic staff to ensure that academic schedules and plans are carried out effectively and efficiently
  • Report to the Superintendent significant issues that prevent the effective and efficient execution of academic schedules and plans, and work closely with the Superintendent to resolve those issues
  • Oversee and manage student behavior issues to ensure a safe and inspiring academic and social environment for students, to maintain a high standard of student conduct, and to afford due process to the rights of students
  • Assist the Superintendent in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning and evaluating of the school’s professional staff
  • Supervise and evaluate all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum
  • Supervise and evaluate all extracurricular activities and programs
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students
  • Prepare or supervise the timely preparation of reports, records, and other documentation required by or for the school’s administration
  • Coordinate with the Business Manager and other involved staff to maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities
  • Coordinate and cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation
  • Make recommendations to the Superintendent as needed and appropriate concerning the school’s administration and instruction
  • Act as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life
  • Oversee arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers
  • Recommend to the Superintendent the removal of staff members whose work is unsatisfactory, according to established standards and procedures
  • Inform the superintendent regarding school activities and other appropriate information
  • Assume responsibility for their own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations, through attendance at regional, state and national meetings, and through enrollment in advanced courses and similar opportunities
  • Ensure the safety and security of buildings and grounds, as well as staff, students, and visitors who may be onsite
  • Ensure that safety plans and procedures are in place and familiar to staff, and that fire drills and other safety drills are conducted regularly
  • Ensure that first aid or other appropriate care is administered to injured or ill students as needed, and that a parent/guardian is informed as soon as possible regarding serious issues
  • Oversee and ensure the supervision of students who are in the building after hours for extracurricular activities
  • If necessary, suspend students for misconduct - according to school policy and guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with the authority of the Right to Privacy Amendment in regard to all information regarding student records



Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid teaching license.
  • Three years experience as a classroom teacher.
  • Two years experience as a school administrator.
  • Communication skills to develop a productive educational experience for both teachers and students.
  • Problem solving skills to enhance teacher performance and improve student grades.
  • Must have means and capacity to perform job related duties with personal vehicle, as will be required and must have proof of current automobile insurance.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License with current DMV printout showing acceptable driving record.
  • Submit to fingerprinting for criminal record clearance, background and child abuse index checks with acceptable results.
  • Home telephone or other effective means of communication.
  • Proof of required education (i.e. BA, BS, MSW, etc.), or resume that meets career development work experience requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous work experience in a professional and supervisory capacity or professional education work for a Tribal school or a public school on an Indian reservation.

Educational Requirements:
  • A Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership
  • A Principal’s K-8 endorsement from the State of Idaho
