Position Summary:
The Superintendent position shall function as the Chief Executive/Principal of the Coeur d’Alene Tribal School and report to the Coeur d’Alene Tribal School Board. Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise the ongoing development and improvement of the Tribal School’s curriculum, ensuring its cultural relevancy to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s history, language, culture, and government.
- Work to ensure educational excellence at the Tribal School, including program evaluation, and consistent quality of fiscal and administration communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to meet the needs of the school.
- Report to the School Board all important school functions, and seek and build Board involvement with strategic direction for all school operations.
- Ensure effective systems to monitor progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure success that can be effectively communicated to the Boards, staff, students and their families, and the community at large.
- Available to respond to any emergencies; state licensing requirements, staffing and/or programmatic challenges; and will immediately notify the A.D.’s office of such action.
- Ensure the Tribal School’s regulations, standards and written systems, such as the Plan of Operations and all other plans, align with the Board’s vision and all Tribal, State, and Federal requirements.
- Supervises all special education programming, ensures its requirements are met in a timely manner in cooperation with Special Education Staff.
- Serve as an official spokesperson for the school and work collaboratively with other local education organizations for greater educational outcomes, transitions and student success.
- Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and family, and community members, Tribal leaders, consultants, public officials, and funding sources.
- Work with Board and staff to develop appropriate strategies and systems that are effective and aligned with the school’s vision/mission and ensure that such strategies are implemented and monitored.
- Work with Board and staff to acquire funding resources for programming, such as grant writing, and grant management systems that are effective and aligned with the school’s vision/mission and strategic plan; and met the overall fiscal needs of the school.
- Work with Business Manager to develop a system of personnel recruitment, assignment, supervision, support, and evaluation consistent with approved Tribal and school personnel policies and procedures which include monthly classroom observation.
- Establish and maintains excellent communication among staff members, as well as between school and community/families through conduct of regular meetings.
- Establish community feedback mechanisms to assure the school’s services are meeting student, family, and community needs; encourage family and community involvement.
- Develop annual budgets with the Business Manager, monitor those budgets and revise as needed; responsible for ensuring that qualified staff are hired to accurately monitor, asses, and manage the financial status of the organization.
- Ensure the health and safety within all school facilities and grounds.
- Oversee that current technology at the school is infused into all areas of the curriculum; work with the Tribe’s IT department to manage IT functions.
- Responsible for the supervision of school athletic competitions, extracurricular activities, and programs that are extensions of the school’s curriculum (i.e. school pow-wow).
- Recommends to the School Board that transportation plan of pupils in accordance with law and safety requirements.
- Responsible for the preparation of reports, applications, and evaluations regarding curriculum, student enrollment, and programs specific to the school such as JOM, Title 1, Gifted and Talented, Speech and Language, etc.
- Maintain and upgrade Technology as the IT Director and Coordinator for the entire school.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous work experience in a professional and supervisory capacity or professional education work for a Tribal school or a public school on an Indian reservation.
- Three years of experience as a classroom teacher.
- Two years of experience as a school administrator.
- Must have means and capacity to perform job related duties with personal vehicle, as will be required and must have proof of current automobile insurance.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License with current DMV printout showing acceptable driving record.
- Submit to fingerprinting for criminal record clearance, background and child abuse index checks with acceptable results.
- Home telephone or other effective means of communication.
- Proof of required education (i.e. BA, BS, MSW, etc.), or resume that meets career development work experience requirements.
Educational Requirements:
- A Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership is required, with a Doctoral Degree (PhD or EdD) preferred.
- A Principal’s K-8 endorsement from the State of Idaho is required, with Superintendent credentials preferred.
