What are the responsibilities and job description for the Waterfowl Biologist position at Coeur d'Alene Tribe?
The Waterfowl Biologist position will be responsible for the management of Tribal wetlands, with an emphasis placed on managing and restoring wildlife habitat as well as the monitoring of waterfowl and other species of Tribal importance. This position will both plan fieldwork and implement on the ground activities that will enhance habitat value to fish and wildlife species.
DUTIES:
- Develop and implement wetland enhancement projects that may include vegetation restoration, invasive species control, water control structures, etc.
- Conduct monitoring of waterfowl and other species of interest.
- Review, revise and propose migratory game bird hunting regulations, and respond to related Tribal and public hunter inquiries.
- Conduct annual monitoring on Tribal wetlands and provide written reports as necessary.
- Manage and maintain long-term data sets related to waterfowl monitoring.
- Collaborate with Tribal Natural Resources staff on projects related to wetland habitat.
- Pursue research opportunities related to waterfowl and wetland management.
- Represent the Coeur d’Alene Tribe at regional forums and workgroups related to wetland and waterfowl management.
- Work to provide long-term funding strategies for the implementation of restoration and monitoring projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate degree in a Natural Resources related field, preferably with an emphasis in wetland or waterfowl management, or a Bachelor’s Degree and three years of experience in wetland and/or waterfowl management.
- Familiarity with waterfowl identification, behavior, and ecology; including skills to differentiate waterfowl age and sex.
- Experience in the capture, handling and banding of migratory bird species.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluating the success of management plan implementation.
- Ability to construct, operate and maintain trapping equipment.
- Knowledge of common wetland management and/or restoration practices.
- Strong writing skills to communicate technical information.
- Ability to work with a diverse team and in remote locations.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies and tribes.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony within the past five years.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Experience in developing and implementing wildlife habitat management plans.
- Experience in conducting a variety of vegetation sampling techniques.
- Experience trailering and operating watercraft, including shallow-draft boats.
- Knowledge of Rocky Mountain flora and the use of dichotomous botanical keys and field guides.
- Knowledge of statistical methodology and analytical software (R, SAS, JMP, etc.).
- Proficiency in the use of GPS and ArcGIS programs.
