Our client is looking for a Diesel Mechanic, the primary purpose of this position is to provide basic mechanical, repair, maintenance, and other related services to the customers. This person must have a clear understanding of routine and complex truck and trailer repair processes, routine maintenance tasks, shop techniques and practices, parts, materials and the operation, use, and basic repair of basic shop equipment. Performs assigned duties and tasks to meet Company standards and customer satisfaction.

This position reports to the Shop Supervisor but may receive work instructions for specific assignments from a lead mechanic or technician. This position impacts the profitability of the Company by working efficiently, not wasting time on the job, not wasting parts and materials, not breaking tools needlessly, and not creating rework.

Duties and Task

  • This position demonstrates that THE CUSTOMER IS THE FIRST PRIORITY and that every employee is here to fully support that priority with quality work, service and on time job completion second to none. Employee must always maintain a professional attitude with customers and other employees.
  • Assists Mechanics with completing complex mechanical truck and trailer service, maintenance, and repairs, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers, including, but not limited to working with the following mechanical systems: engine, electrical, drive train, tire, steering, suspension, refrigeration units, etc.
  • Performs vehicle and trailer inspections according to DOT standards and understands what is necessary to bring identified basic deficiencies into compliance.
  • Performs routine and complex vehicle fluid and filter checks and replacements. Checks these systems according to manufacturer’s specifications and replaces fluids and filters with appropriate materials and according to MAD J standards.
  • Conducts routine vehicle and trailer electrical inspections. Makes routine replacements of fuses, bulbs, batteries, etc. Makes routine and complex electrical repairs, installations and replacements.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for engine and related systems.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for electrical and related systems.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for drive train and related systems.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for wheel, tire, axle and related systems.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for refrigeration units and related systems.
  • Performs routine and complex troubleshooting, repair and replacement procedures, on all makes and models of trucks and trailers for steering, suspension and related systems.
  • Informs Supervisor regarding problems or difficulties encountered during troubleshooting repair or maintenance procedures. Discusses any problems, complaints, requests, or ideas with the Supervisor.
  • Assists the Shop Supervisor with training other mechanics working in the shop.
  • Appropriately uses all measurement tools and equipment assigned to the shop.
  • Returns unused stock inventory, job parts, tools, and equipment to appropriate storage locations at the end of each business day.
  • Assists with managing the stock and equipment inventories as assigned to the shop. Takes and reports physical counts of stock inventory according to schedule established by the Shop Supervisor. Notifies Shop Supervisor when stock inventories are approaching reorder points.
  • Notifies Shop Supervisor in a timely manner when non-stock parts are needed on a maintenance job so that the parts can be ordered quickly and not significantly delay the job’s scheduled completion.
  • Assists with the receipt, distribution, and storage of job and inventory parts, job materials and equipment.
  • Assists with cleaning, stocking, and organizing parts storage area(s) as directed.
  • Provides suggestions for improvement of shop operation, including efficiency, cost reduction or method upgrades to provide better, more profitable, or timelier service.
  • Assists with the training of other technical staff as assigned by answering questions and showing by example.
  • Helps maintain the appearance of Company vehicles, trailers, shop, building and grounds by always picking up areas and equipment when you have completed your assignments or utilized Company equipment.
  • Assists with general cleanup of work area or shop as assigned.
  • May be required to cover the shop operations in the event of a vacation or absence of the Shop Supervisor.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork and reports accurately and submits in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for keeping assigned company tools available and undamaged at all times, which will include Company assigned tablet.
  • Will be required to utilize shop software on a daily basis which includes: creating jobs, clocking in and out of jobs, accurately entering all parts used on jobs, and entering all notes efficiently and thoroughly.
  • Uses shop equipment in an appropriate and safe manner. Follows safety procedures to minimize risk of damage to property or personal injury. Especially uses precaution when working around explosive materials, solvents, and when removing or replacing gas tanks.
  • Works in a safe manner obeying Company safety policies, OSHA codes and requirements, common safety practices, and appropriately uses protective equipment and clothing.
  • Moves equipment and material to and from shop in a manner to prevent
  • damage to MAD J’s equipment or property.
  • As assigned, moves customer’s vehicles and trailers in and out of shop and around storage yard to prevent damage to Company and customer’s property.
  • Performs any other duty or assignment as requested from time to time by the Shop Supervisor or designated supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Requires valid current Iowa driver’s license.
  • Employee must have the ability to drive all types of trucks, including manual transmissions.
  • Three to five years of experience with diesel truck repair is preferred, but 2 years of experience is required.
  • Employee must have the ability to consistently present him/herself and the company to the public in a clean, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Employee must work professionally and be respectful of all other employees of this company.
  • Employee must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Employee must have the ability to write a work order.
  • All employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug test.
  • Employee understands MAD J requires all employees to submit to random drug/alcohol testing if they are randomly selected throughout the year, at no cost to the employee.
  • Requires mechanical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read technical diagrams and manuals.
  • Requires working knowledge and ability to use mechanical tools and equipment such as wrenches, lifts, etc.
  • Working knowledge and ability to use diagnostic and repair tools and equipment.
  • Basic math, language and logic skills.
  • Ability to work quickly, correctly, cleanly, and effectively. Must be able to perform mechanical and repair jobs within the average time parameters specified in the labor guide.
  • Ability to communicate and work positively and professionally in English as the
  • majority of customers communicate in this language.
  • Prefer High School Diploma or equivalent with tech school training or two years related experience.
  • Basic hand tools to match job conditions.
