Cohere For AI (C4AI) is the dedicated research arm of Cohere, and our mission is to make progress on fundamental problems in Machine Learning. Our mandate is to imagine the next generation of AI models and to work at the frontier of what is possible. We are a hybrid lab, with both full-time research and engineering staff in addition to an open science initiative that supports collaborative research across institutions and paths of access for independent researchers.
In this role, you will be an integral part of our research lab's communication strategy, bringing our complex ideas and findings to life through engaging visuals. Your creative skills will help bridge the gap between technical research and public understanding, making our work more accessible while maintaining our brand presence. By crafting visually appealing content, you will contribute to increasing our presence and impact, ensuring our research reaches and resonates with its intended audiences.
Please note, this is a part-time (~20 hours/week) contract position. The initial contract length is for 12 months with a possibility of extension.

As a Research Visual Storyteller, You Will
- Create design assets, videos, and marketing materials that convey our lab’s brand, initiatives and research across a variety of platforms
- Create engaging assets to communicate complex research findings and ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Re-design and brand plots, graphs, and visuals from research papers to make them more accessible to our audiences.
- Design logos, icons, and GIFs to represent new models, releases, and research projects.
- Edit and produce videos, including interviews, with simple animations and visual effects to enhance the impact of the content.
- Collaborate with researchers and the operations team to understand the key messages and develop creative ways to convey them visually.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest visual communications strategies in the AI space and consider how our lab may engage in trends.
- Propose new ideas and formats (e.g., infographics, animations, interactive visuals) to effectively communicate research and engage the target audience.
- Ensure brand consistency across all visual assets and maintain a high standard of quality.
- Consider the various outlets for our communications (eg. Social media, email, website, IRL events) and make recommendations on how to modify visuals for these various mediums
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines, working efficiently within the allocated ~20 hours per week.
- Contribute to the overall visual strategy and help elevate the research lab's presence and impact.
- 2 years in design, preferably in the tech or research sectors
- Strong portfolio showcasing your design process, initiative-taking, problem-solving skills, and the impact of your work
- Proficiency in Figma and video-editing tools
- Familiarity with Twitter, LinkedIn, Blue Sky and TikTok, and how to create engaging content for each of these spaces
- The ability to quickly iterate and prepare assets within short deadlines
- Bonus: genuine interest in AI research and open-science community
