As an integral member of the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, the intern will support our dynamic Bay Area, CA site locations on key projects, gaining hands-on experience in workplace safety, environmental compliance, and risk mitigation. This internship offers an opportunity to develop essential skills in safety management while actively contributing to a safer and more sustainable work environment. The role involves collaborating with our extended team to identify, assess, and control workplace hazards while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct Job Safety Analyses (JSA) for various tasks and processes to identify potential safety and environmental hazards in manufacturing areas.
- Collaborate with EHS, Facilities, and Engineering teams to develop and implement effective safety controls.
- Support EHS initiatives and projects aimed at improving workplace safety and compliance.
- Monitor and report on the effectiveness of safety measures by collecting and analyzing data trends.
- Maintain and organize EHS records using internal EHS Management Systems.
- Assist in reviewing and updating site EHS programs, guidelines, and procedures.
- Conduct routine inspections under the supervision of EHS and site leadership.
- Follow up on employee EHS concerns and participate in incident investigations.
Education & Experience
- Currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field, OR an Engineering major with an interest in EHS.
- No prior experience required; coursework or projects related to EHS is a plus.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

- Detail-oriented and highly organized to effectively manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Basic understanding of OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other EHS regulations (preferred but not required).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and familiarity with digital tools such as CoPilot and ChatGPT.
Working Conditions
- Work will be conducted in both office and manufacturing environments, including cleanroom settings.
- Full-time internship (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday); 100% on-site presence required.
- Must be comfortable working in a multicultural, global team environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for up to 6 hours per day.
- Ability to stand for extended periods as required.
- May need to climb ladders.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
Safety Requirements
All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
