- Observing students in their natural environments to gather information about their behavior, interests, and needs
- Conducting assessments of students’ academic skills to determine their needs, such as in reading comprehension, basic mathematics skills, or writing ability
- Creating individualized lesson plans that are tailored to meet each student’s specific needs
- Providing one-on-one tutoring to students who need extra help with their schoolwork
- Communicating regularly with teachers and parents about student progress
- Helping students learn to read by using methods such as phonics and teaching them about the structure of language and how it impacts comprehension
- Conducting group instruction in reading for students who have similar needs
- Providing enrichment activities or remedial instruction in reading skills such as phonics or fluency exercises
