Job Overview
Perform daily insurance related activities to meet the facility’s billing demands. Ensure that accurate billing is managed for services rendered by the facility and audit billing systems to ensure accuracy. Assist with medical billing activities as needed.
Medical billing coordinators ensure that all patients’ claims are managed properly. Medical billing coordinators may be expected to follow up on claims to ensure that they are being paid and monitor claims that remain unpaid and initiate tracers. In the event of a claim being denied, it may be their responsibility to resubmit the claim and monitor it until such a claim has been reconciled.
Duties
- Take incoming billing calls.
- Answer questions and resolve problems regarding medical billing activities.
- Manage contraception task box.
- Verify coverage of birth control devices / and communicate to staff and patients.
- Assist staff and patients with billing questions.
- Post credit card payments from phone calls.
- Track and resolve billing discrepancies.
- Activate and deactivate patients accounts upon request.
- Workflow dashboard / eligibility task
- Verify Athena eligibly daily.
- Assist the Surgery Scheduling Department with insurance verification / prior authorization for upcoming surgery if needed.
- Assist in collection of deductible / co-insurance for surgeries and in office procedures.
- Assist with OB Prepayment Plan Worksheet.
- Process and submit medical billing claims to insurance companies and patients.
- Review patient records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring all necessary documentation is included.
- Utilize coding systems such as ICD-9 and DRG to assign appropriate codes for diagnoses and procedures.
- Conduct follow-ups on unpaid claims and manage medical collections effectively.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical terminology, billing practices, and relevant regulations.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to resolve discrepancies in billing or coding.
- Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Skills
- Proficiency in medical billing software and systems.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, coding (ICD-9), and billing processes.
- Experience in medical collections is preferred.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and patients.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliance standards.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems is a plus.
