Job Summary:

The College of Lake County (CLC) is seeking an Instructor, Automotive Technology for the instruction of first and second-year college-level courses to a diverse student body at our Grayslake, Lakeshore, and Southlake campuses as well as local business, community, and industry partners. The Automotive Technology Department offers an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree and certificate programs, preparing students for careers in the automotive industry. As a Master Certified (MAST) program by the ASE Education Foundation, CLC provides hands-on training in eight key automotive systems: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, braking systems, electrical/electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.

Job Description:

1) Selects, prepares, maintains, and updates current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.

2) Provides students and the academic division a syllabus that clearly states course objectives and learning outcomes, attendance policies in line with those of the College, texts and readings, timelines and evaluation criteria, and any other information required by College, academic division, or department.

3) Meets all classes at assigned times. If unable to meet an assigned class, reports absence to supervisor and academic division staff in an appropriate manner.

4) Teaches assigned courses in subject field each academic semester to meet the needs of students, the department and the community. Delivers course content using a variety of teaching styles at various times and campus locations. 5) Provides instructional support to the students. Assists in student advisement and refers students, when appropriate, to sources of specialized services within the College. Is available for student consultation through phone, email or appropriately established office hours (in-person or online).

6) Participates in developing and administering department and college-wide assessment of student learning. Uses departmental testing instruments as provided and administers other instruments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department, academic division or College. Provides all results as requested.

7) Evaluates student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, or examinations. Provides feedback to students in a timely manner on student performance.

8) Maintains accurate grade records as required by the College. Submits all attendance and grade records electronically prior to the required deadlines. Produces appropriate grade records for supervisor upon request.

9) Uses the appropriate College policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns and problems.

10) Encourages students to submit course evaluations, reviews course evaluations when available and uses feedback to improve course delivery.

11) Participates, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of career program advisory committees, governance groups, College, academic division, and department committees.

12) Attends faculty meetings, department meetings and all other meetings called by authorized personnel.

13) Attends Opening Week activities and Commencement.

14) Is ethical in all conduct and maintains a high level of professionalism.

15) Consistently completes all mandated compliance trainings.

16) Properly and effectively utilizes appropriate technology such as Navigate, Canvas, and Zoom to deliver instructional materials, maintain grades, and provide timely communications with students, etc.

17) Maintains current knowledge of subject matter via professional development such as professional organization membership, attendance of seminars, conferences and classes, and professional publications.

18) Follows all institutional and regulatory policies, procedures and standards. Utilizes self-assessment to determine progress in meeting performance objectives and career goals.

19) Actively supports the College and academic division through ongoing service and engagement.

20) Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: College: Knowledge of College policies, procedures, and practices including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); ability to apply sound reasoning to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form; ability to work effectively and constructively with individuals and teams from diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL : Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1) High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) or more years (10,000 hours) of recent experience as a journeyman level technician (or higher), ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician, ASE Advanced Engine Performance Specialist Certification (L1)

Associate’s degree or higher in Automotive Technology in related field, plus three (3) or more years (6,000 hours) of recent experience as a journeyman level technician (or higher), ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician, ASE Advanced Engine Performance Specialist Certification (L1)

2) Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record

3) Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, and over 50 lbs. on an occasional basis with or without reasonable accommodations. Continuously walking or standing, frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting and occasionally sitting

Desired Qualifications:

Prior college-level teaching experience

Demonstrated professional learning or certification in evidence-based student-focused pedagogical teaching and assessment practice such as ACUE, workshops and data use

Proficiency with manufacturer and aftermarket scan tools

This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience. An optional contract for the summer session offers the potential for significantly greater earnings.

The minimum 2024 - 2025 academic year (fall and spring semester) base salary range is $69,117 with a master’s degree to $83,790 with a doctorate in the subject field. The base salary range for the 2025-2026 academic year has not been determined.

The hiring range is $69,117 to $122,758 based on education and relevant experience.

Faculty may be assigned to any of the three campuses; Grayslake, Lakeshore or Southlake. New faculty hires are required to attend orientation the week (August 4-8) before the start date of August 11, 2025.
