What are the responsibilities and job description for the Culinary Arts Instructor position at College of Southern Idaho?
CSI is seeking applications for a full-time, 9-month Culinary Arts instructional position. The successful candidate will be part of a motivated and innovative instructional team dedicated to student success and industry responsiveness.
This position is responsible for delivering comprehensive culinary arts and hospitality instruction to students, encompassing food preparation techniques, sanitation procedures, menu planning, dining room service protocols, and customer service skills, while preparing students for entry-level positions within the culinary and hospitality industry.
The instructor is responsible for the development, implementation, management and instruction to students including the fundamentals of food preparation, culinary techniques, sanitation practices, menu planning, hospitality service standards, table etiquette, and customer service, while providing hands-on training in a kitchen and dining room environment, all while maintaining a focus on career readiness and industry best practices
The instructor, in partnership with the instructional team within the culinary and baking programs, will be responsible for the operation of a student-run café and for developing student skills, knowledge, and attitudes commensurate to the goals of the program and effectively using materials and equipment to meet goals
The instructor is responsible for creating lesson plans, providing hands-on instruction, and developing and delivering assessments. They may also offer advice on menu design and the selection of ingredients. The instructor is also responsible for giving students a safe and supportive learning environment.
The successful candidate will work with other instructors within the program to facilitate the learning process by designing and implementing appropriate, meaningful and equitable instructional activities, while evaluating student learning by creating and applying well-designed assessment tools. This will be accomplished through curriculum development, annual program review, mentoring of students, and in collaboration with community and industry for successful placement into the workforce.
The instructor coordinates work with other instructional and college personnel, including reporting, enrollment management, and other activities. The position requires qualification for an Idaho Career-Technical Postsecondary teaching credential.
The successful candidate will assist students to connect with academic and non-academic support services as needed; engage in institutional service, professional development, and other duties assigned by the Department Chair and Dean.
Teaching responsibilities may include mornings, afternoons, online, or hybrid, and is subject to change as needed.
This position also keeps accurate records pertaining to students and adheres to all institutional policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach a full semester credit load of courses in accordance with the descriptions published in the CSI catalog, or as defined by the Department Chair. This may include courses and/or topics in culinary and hospitality related courses.
- Teach classes in various modalities including, hybrid, online, and traditional face-to-face formats, utilizing technology such as Zoom for synchronous sessions.
- Maintain course content in the Learning Management System, Canvas.
- Design and help implement curriculum that is relevant to current practices in the industry
- Recruit and advise students.
- Monitor student progress and retention.
- Develop an annual plan for personal development.
- Complete First Camp! training or the equivalent university coursework as required by the Idaho Division of Career and Technical Education Division to obtain teaching credentials.
- Participate in faculty development goals to improve professional effectiveness including instructional evaluation process, “New Teacher” effective teaching workshops, and other professional development opportunities to include a three-year onboarding process.
- Coordinate with others who are teaching within the program to ensure program-level objectives are being met.
- Continuously review and update curriculum and instructional content with IT program managers.
- Collaborate annually with those in the department to complete program review.
- Implement course-level and program-level outcomes assessment strategies.
- Monitor student progress and retention.
- Develop an annual plan for personal development.
- Assist with an annual plan for the unit (program) development and budget.
- Participate in the biannual, industry-specific advisory committee.
- Develop and cultivate positive relationships with local industry.
- Engage in activities to stay current in the discipline, including those that meet the requirements for the State of Idaho Teaching credential renewal.
- Maintain all industry certifications or licensure.
- Participate in activities or organizations to promote professional development including those available on campus or through discipline-specific training.
- Participate in campus committees, faculty senate, and department meetings and activities.
- Complete all administrative duties including, but not limited to, entering attendance, drop for no show, summary of student evaluations at the end of each semester, uploading syllabi to the central repository, etc., and following campus-wide or department-level policies and procedures.
- Participate in all graduation exercises.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills
- Industry experience acquired by full-time, successful employment in the culinary field; preferably with management experience OR applicable education in a related field.
- ServSafe Managers Certification
- ServSafe Proctor
- Ability to obtain State of Idaho CTE Teaching certification. Teacher credentialing requirements include a combination of work experience and education accumulating a minimum of 8 years of recent, full-time employment/education (see https://cte.idaho.gov/educators-5/become-a-cte-educator/).
- Ability to adapt to variety of teaching methodologies including lectures, group activities, individual instruction, distance learning, and teaching with technology.
- Proficiency in usage of internet, email, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching at a community college or with adult learners preferred.
- Experience using instructional technology to deliver courses online preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Must be able to travel to professional development events, for recruitment purposes, for field trips, and to visit cooperative training sites. The successful applicant will work directly with program students in the classroom, laboratory, and supervised work experience environments. Use of program specific equipment and hand tools will be necessary, and lifting (up to 50 lbs.) will be necessary at times.
- Maintain classroom, classroom equipment, and/or lab equipment, and independent computer network as needed.
