What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Sheriff position at Collin County?
Collin County is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff to provide law enforcement services to unincorporated areas of Collin County. You do NOT need to have a current peace office license in order to apply. Should you be hired without a license you will be sent to the academy to earn your license within one year of employment.

Applications submitted via the Collin County website will be accepted until 5:00pm June 12, 2023. . The Deputy Sheriff written exam will be held on Saturday, June 17th, 2023.
You will not be eligible to take the test until you have a complete, correct application AND THE COMPLETION IS CONFIRMED by Human Resources. Confirmation will be sent via email as soon as your application is complete. Corrections will be sent if needed until completion is achieved. Corrections must be submitted before 5:00pm on June 12th.
Only candidates who are available for shift work, including overnight shifts, are eligible to apply for this position - candidates MUST be available to work any shift. Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Candidates must have one of the following combinations of education and experience:
High school diploma or GED with one of the following:
- Thirty (30) hours of college education from a regionally accredited university or college with a 2.0 or higher overall grade point average; OR
- Two years of active duty U.S. Military service with an Honorable Discharge; OR
- Two years of full-time law enforcement service in the United States as a Police Officer, Jailer, Dispatcher, or Corrections Officer.
If a candidate without a license is hired, they will attend the first available academy to earn their license. The required license must be earned within one year of employment.
Copies of the following documents are required during the background check process for Deputy Sheriff. The Sheriff’s Office requires you to present these documents to the background investigators on the day of the exam. If you are not able to supply these required documents, you will not be considered for the position.
- Current, unexpired Texas Driver's License
- Birth Certificate (original or original copy)
- High School Diploma, Transcript, or GED (original or original copy)
- Transcript(s) from all colleges attended (original or original copy)
- Military-DD214 (if applicable)
- United States citizenship documents if not born in the United States
Applicants for the Deputy Sheriff position will proceed through a series of tests based on passing scores and rankings. Here is a list of what can be expected:

LATERAL HIRE EXEMPTION
Applicants who meet a certain, higher level of experience and licensing may qualify for consideration as a “Lateral Hire.” A Lateral Hire candidate is exempt from some, but not all, pre-employment processes as defined in the Collin County Sheriff’s Office Civil Service Rules document. The section pertaining to Deputy Sheriff Lateral Hire qualifications and exemption is below:
Qualifications for Lateral Hire: A person who (1) has five cumulative years of full-time law-enforcement experience as a peace officer, including experience in an agency outside of the state, (2) has a current Texas peace officer’s license, and (3) is currently employed by a Texas law-enforcement agency and is in good standing, including with respect to psychological and physical fitness and weapons proficiency, is eligible for the following lateral-hire exemptions.
Lateral-Hire Exemptions:
A person, who qualifies for lateral hire, is exempt from this section’s requirements or provisions: (1) to undergo a psychological examination, if the person submits proof they have completed a psychological examination within the last five years that is valid with TCOLE, (2) to undergo a polygraph examination, and (3) to pass a physical-agility test. Lateral-hire candidates must complete and return a Personal History Statement to the Sheriff’s Office no later than 21 calendar days after receiving the Statement.
