About the Work Unit
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services maintains four operational forensic science laboratories throughout the state: Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction, and Greeley. Forensic Services is responsible for the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes. The role of our evidence technicians is to maintain the integrity and quality of items submitted as evidence by our customers. In order to best serve the citizens of Colorado, we strive to build and maintain partnerships not only with law enforcement agencies but also within the communities we serve.
About the Job
The Technician III must ensure the timely, complete and accurate initial entry of vital information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or other data information systems in support of the forensic laboratory system. This position is responsible for consulting with and deferring to laboratory management as it relates to all evidence based duties. The Evidence Technician III may be required to provide courtroom testimony. This position may be responsible for assisting in the Toxicology section as staffing needs arise.
Key Responsibilities
Evidence Receiving, Packaging, Handling, Transporting, Releasing, and Destroying
This position is responsible for case submission in LIMS, receiving evidence from law enforcement agencies, and following approved and legal guidelines for evidence. This position will ensure the integrity of the evidence by maintaining an accurate chain of custody and checking for proper packaging of the evidence. Evidence Technician IIIs will transport evidence between CBIFS Laboratories, transfer evidence from the evidence vault to CBIFS employees for analysis, and release evidence back to the submitting agency after testing is complete. This position is responsible for creating accurate laboratory records, and entering information accurately into the LIMS. The Technician III supports the toxicology staff with the responsibility of receipt, cataloging, storage, preservation, and return/destruction of blood kit and biological evidence submitted to the laboratory. This individual will send biological specimens out to other laboratories for additional testing and help in the laboratory as needed. This individual must also support toxicology staff with electronic records management to include document uploads, photography of evidence, and entering worksheet data. The Technician III will provide guidance and assistance with specific training tasks for newer Technician IIIs. This individual will be responsible for regularly consulting with and deferring to a Technician IV, Work Lead (Technician V), and laboratory management as it relates to all aspects of evidence handling.Evidence Storage
This position is responsible for proper storage and accurate chain of custody for all items located in the evidence vault. The Technician III must comply with all ISO/IEC 17025 requirements along with ensuring that all CBIFS policies and procedures involving the storage of physical evidence and property are adhered to. This position must ensure that access to the vault is restricted at all times in order to maintain the integrity of the evidence. This position is required to be available to assist in audits as required by the policies and procedures of the CBIFS. When errors arise, the Technician III participates in a root cause analysis.This position will be responsible for regularly consulting with and deferring to Technician IV, Work Lead, or laboratory management as it relates to all aspects surrounding vault audits
and evidence storage.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three years experience researching confidential database, cataloging information and clerical responsibilities.
OR
Three years of course work from an accredited educational institution in any field.

Experience with evidence handling in a law enforcement agency.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application.
- A valid current driver's license is required to perform the duties of this position. This position is required to drive a state-owned vehicle to gather evidence from temporary facilities within the region.
- This position is requires to move up to 40-50 pounds from one location to the next occasionally.
- This position frequently lifts and carries items or containers that may be heavy or require lifting above the shoulders. This position also requires frequent walking, pulling and pushing.
- This position is required to be available to respond to the central evidence facility to assist troopers in booking large quantities of evidence.
- This position may be required to handle, package and store evidence items that could be considered hazardous. Drug testing equipment contains caustic materials or acids as do the dangerous drugs themselves. Although infrequent, it is possible for this position to have direct exposure to hazardous materials.
- Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, a fingerprint based criminal history search and drug testing.
